    Default Wrong WEP allows connection

I have kept a WEP key for my wifi connection.
I intentionally tested security with a wrong WEP key.
Laptop doesnt connect but my Nokia handset gets Connected and then displays Invalid Server Name.

I really have no clue why it shows "Connected" !
Does this mean my wifi is insecure and people can connect to it ? I am a bit worried.

    Kindly help. Thanks in advance

Mention modem - model and make.

Change your encryption to WPA2. WEP is easy to crack. Don't worry even if it is showing connected. You cannot use net it without password (or are you able to ? ).

It is Nokia Siemens 1600 router with BSNL connection.

By password which one are you referring, the WEP passkey or the Username - Password for the connection given by BSNL.

As far as bridged connection goes, it will be fine but my concern is pppoe connection which is always on.
I do not want any random system to get connected

    I meant WEP password.

No it won't, unless someone is proficient enough in cracking WEP.

In your wifi Network all SSID's (open ) in range will appear.
    You can HIDE yours.
If you select any it will show Connected.
you will be asked to enter the key ( if secured connection )

I cannot connect to UTstarcom . KK is my SSID.
so nothing abnormal Nokia shows connected.

Find out the MAC address of your wifi card and enter it in White list
also of Nokia Phone.. and other systems you use.

    Welcome

Does it mean that you shifted to WPA2 and added MAC filter ?

Is there any difference between WPA and WPA-PSK ?

Is it fine to use WPA-PSK ratherthan WPA2-PSK ?

WPA2 is considered more secure than other encryptions.

Adding WPA2 is just like WPA PSK. But it is your choice.

If you want to secure your WiFi fool proof, simply add a MAC filter. Create white list of your devices. You can get it from the DHCP page of modem. Once added, only machines with MAC ID entered in white list can access your WiFi.

    This may help

I may be sounding dumb asking so many queries, but then again I have 2 more questions.

    1. In my router page, under the basic settings for wireless I found a column for country . It is set to United States by default. Does it need to be changed ?

    2. Are we authorized by BSNL to fiddle with router settings?
I hope it doesn't cause any trouble w.r.t. Terms and Conditions, or the BSNL Broadband Plans !

    Code:
     IF IT works Don't Repair
    .

    1. can change to INDIA ( if not seen ASIA)
    2. If purchased outright Bsnl does not care.
If on rent, if the modem is "NOT DEAD" exchange possible.

country column is most probably for modem time zone setting.my modem has a default NTP time server to syncronize time with.

Simple. Select the SSID of your connection from the " wireless network " and enter the password you set for the encryption. Ready to go.

Are you able to connect without encryption ? Check and update.

    Need info

    1. Mobile : Model and make

    2. Error no./code if any

    3. Modem - model and make

You can alternatively remove encryption and simply set up MAC filter. You can find the MAC ID of your mobile, other devices in the DHCP page of your modem.

Why do I need to set a country to use my Wireless network?

Different countries have different laws about how you can transmit radio signals. Since Wireless networking uses radio signals, You need to be careful in choosing the right ProductName that complies to your country. The correct ProductName chosen for the country will ensure that all the options chosen comply with the laws of the country. The ProductName should only be changed if you change the country.
