Default Should i go for BSNL wireless modem??

    Hey Guys,

First of all am happy that i have joined as a new member here. I have BSNL Connection for past 2 years. Eventually i have bought a laptop and a ipod touch. Now i am thinking to switch to Wireless modem. I want to know whether BSNL wireless modem is good and shall i access internet through multiple devices using the same modem or should i go for some other wireless modem. If not BSNL suggest me some Good Wireless MODEM.

    Thanks all in Advance

I am using BSNL WiFi modem on Rs. 80 per month rent. You can get one for rent or Rs. 1,800 outright purchase. If any damage occurs, you can get a free replacement within one year. It is wise to use BSNL modem as otherwise BSNL staff blame even line problems on your modem and play ignorant.

What is the Radius of activity and height involved /
Where will you position the system and modem/router ,
    Ground floor First floor etc.
No of systems to be used laptops cellphone Ps3 etc.

Bsnl WIFI modems have single antenna and limited range ,
compared to wide choice of wifi routers available in the
market. They can be used along with the present
BSNL ADSL modem. ( whether purchased outright or on rental basis)

    Feedback.
Mention area where you stay in Chennai.

    Hey Guys,

    meetdilip , essbebe

Thanks a lot for the immediate response. I do appreciate it. I browsed through the links you suggested. I need a coverage area of 30m. Am gonna use only ipod and one laptop along with the Desktop. So i thought i could go for TYPE-II "Quidway WA1003A ADSL Modem" from BSNL. It seems it has USB , LAN and WLAN. Is that ok ??
Because i see so much negative reviews about this modem.
I have three rooms altogether, i need a decent wireless range. Pls Advice. You could even suggest modem apart from the ones provided by BSNL.

    @essbebe

They can be used along with the present
    BSNL ADSL modem ??

I got a Adsl2 lan and usb modem. Are u saying that i dont have to go for a new modem, instead i could buy a router alone and use it along with modem ?? Pls clarify !!

I am not sure about the model you suggested.

    --

As suggested above you can simply use a WiFi router which can work with your current non WiFi modem and give WiFi signals.

    Please do this test:
If you have a cordless phone ( preferably 2.4 Ghz type)
try to locate Handset from Base
( within a radius of 100 feet ) or try an Intercom conversation.
Cordless base in same room , where computer is located.

    2.
MY wifirouter Netgear WGR614v6 ( cost Rs1500/= approx)
distance of about 30 feet . Failed in same ground floor ( flats)

    3
Your budget for a wifi router.
For a month rent ( Rs 80/=P.M ) above WA 1003_A wifi router
( sometimes OLD is Gold !!!)
Exchange for adsl modem if on rent.
    test wifi operations.

    Feedback.

i came across such situation and I shifted the wifi modem to 1st floor , where from it serves both the floors above and below. Hope my experience helps to optimise.

    @mvs sarma
unfortunately we own two flats in ground floor only.
the other two flats in first floor: owners are different !
@catchtheerror also mentioned no height involved.
I asked him the same query because the
radius of acivity 100 feet was mentioned.
( anticipated different floors in a flat complex)

    Hi,

Sorry i dont hav cordless phone.
shall i go for "wifirouter Netgear WGR614v6 " or WA 1003_A wifi router ??

I called up BSNl. They told i have to fill some form, once its done they will give the modem !!
I bought this DNA-A201 ADSL2+ Modem/Router (1 Eth+ 1 USB ) , so cant replace it. So this time i am goin to hire the modem. Is there any deposit ?? If so, is the deposit refundable?? If i have to replace the modem once again, is there any time limit for that ??

    Pls advice,
Thanks a lot for all the support. This is the first time am posting in a forum and am simply amazed by the reponse.

Go for Netgear WA 1003_A, Netgear products are the best for all your networking and wireless needs, I've been using netgear products from past many years and I think it's the best.

PM means Private Message here in this forum. ( Check your USERCP)
Anyway, the offer would have been free, and you missed the chance!

Hope you will post progress/ problems if any about your wifi set up here.

If your OS is Windows 7 and your desktop or laptop has a wlan card
an application called "connectify" ( free download) will make one system a Wireless A>P for other laptops /cellphone etc to connect.
in wifi mode. ( within small range )
This laptop (AP) must have a broadband connection.

    2. Even now In Wirelesss network in laptops some nearby wifi stations (SSID) with/without security key may appear. WIFI router not switched on.

    A.P Accesss point.
    SSID: Serviceset Identifier.

PS( Post Script): SMCkavika is my SSID working fine.Yellow mark no security key used.
