Default Severe Internet Problems since 14/07 (slow speed+packet drop)

    Location: Kolkata
    Plan: BSNL Home 500
    connection type: ppoe (using dialer)
dns: either default dns or reliance dns (same problem with both)
    modem: D-link GLB-802c

Since Friday something happened to my internet connection - pages open very slowly and there is a lot of packet drops.

Here is speed from speedtest.net to delhi server :

ok now test to california usa:

    modem dsl parameters (snr/atten):
    Local Tx Power: 10.7 dB
    Remote Tx Power: 15.7 dB
    Local Line Atten.: 11.0 dB
    Remote Line Atten.: 5.5 dB
    Local SNR Margin: 22.5 dB
    Remote SNR Margin: 18.0 dB
    Self Test: Passed
    DSL Standard: G.dmt

Torrent speed is also down to 50-60kbps instead of the usual 195 kbps on utorrent (195 is the upper limit i set it to). Also speed fluctuates a lot.

Additionally there is a lot of packet loss to all servers and latency is a good 100-150ms higher than normal values :
There is a lot of jitter as well.

(usually ping to google is 250-300ms max)

Youtube video and streaming music is not working well at all either.

If I call bsnl what do i tell them ? They just want to know if internet is on or off or gets disconnected - although neither happens the quality of the line is awful.

    Help please.

yeah my phone line is fine.
if my phone line sounds normal and snr/atten values are normal; i don't think it's a line problem; although i'm not 100% sure.

Yeah definitely a major problem on bsnl's end, this crap has been going on for more than a week; the issue is I'm not even sure how to fix it; bsnl customer service only wants to know if internet is connected or not; they don't seem to understand what packet loss means.

Really messed up routing i guess.

As usual I find it really weird that no one else is reporting this, since the problem is definitely not just on my end lol.

I noticed one thing in broadband speed test, My Plan is 2mbps Plan
When I Check in dataone.in-> ADSL Speed test,
it shows connection speeds of 1.5 mbps, sometimes 1.4mbps ,0.7 mbps

But when I checked in speedtest.net
it shows only 0.4 mbps or sometimes 0.5 mbps

The torrent speeds are very low only 10 kbps maximum

WTH happening in BSNL, does it happens to anyone of guys???

Default same problem again 31st july

The same problem has started yet again as of 31st july.

Again, the same problem of heavy packet loss and fluctuating latency.

In lay man's terms - pages not opening, pages opening slow, streaming data either not working or getting stuck, downloads slow/fluctuating a lot etc.

ridiculous latency and packet loss to an australian server ...
don't even know what to say.

here's the tracert to the server you asked for:

an *INDIAN* server with 391ms .............
    wtf ?????

I think i'm really really sick of the cycle of :
"o it's the end or start of the month"
"o we just repaired everything so obviously internet will be garbage" (reverse logic)
"o it's the end of the week"
    "o new billing cycle"
"hey guys underwater cable went down so we bought a retarded routing that goes to australia via uzbekistan then thailand then california then perth"

anyway 59 series IP, location kolkata.

    Thanks a lot.

I'm stuck with BSNL, as there is no other ISP in my area.

Have you tried with a different modem on the same line and checked?

May be you should try BSNL EvDO. They give 3.2 Mbps unlimited for Rs. 750.

Attenuation is a bit high. Are you too far from exchange. If possible, get your line checked. Make sure there are no joints, non insulated, non oxidised parts etc. Talk to the line man and ask him to deal with it.
