Default Best BSNL plan for gaming i.e. low ping?

    Hi everyone,
I m currently on BBG Combo ULD 1000 plan, this give me 2mbps upto 15gb downlink and 370kbps uplink. But as far the ping is concerned, its not good at all, on indian servers, it gives me 120 ping :O and on global servers it gives 300 pings :'(.

Please suggest me a plan that gives low ping on indian servers and just fair ping global servers.

    Thanks in advance.

You won't get better pings if you change you plan. It depends on routing.

There is no option. Try talking to SDE or higher. They will understand. BSNL is not good for online gaming. I have myself tried Counter strike. Used to get killed even before I aim. Check if you have any other provider in your area. Ask those who are already using them about the ping. But if you have only BSNL, only option is to try talking to someone at exchange. But I am not sure how effective it will be.

hmmm. Other than BSNL, i have sify in my area but that is also not very good. I will try consulting with SDE.

I use UL 750. I get around 50+ KBps upload speed. The maximum for an ADSL connection is 768 Kbps. May be ULD 1350 gets that. Start a new thread asking those who use that plan.

Reliance and MTNL are supposedly the best for online gaming but they both have extremely limited availability.

Airtel and BSNL are the next best.

Internet quality for online gaming basically involves:
    1) Latency - - this is dependant on routing and congestion
    2) Packet loss/Jitter -- dependant on line quality, congestion and routing again
    3) Outages -- depends on the service provider.

Bandwidth requirements for gaming are actually really low. Even if you use a VoIP like skype, mumble or ventrilo.

Online gaming sort of works with BSNL - any 1Mps+ plan with a very high download limit is probably best.

Latency really depends on which server you are playing on (US/EU/Asia/India etc). And that will be uniformly awful on every ISP in India. At best you will get a 50ms upgrade switching ISPs.

Airtel typically has higher average latencies during "good" cycles.
BSNL typically has slightly lower latencies during "good" cycles.

I use the term cycles since internet in india goes from absolutely appaling quality (heavy packet loss, jitter, drops, high latency) for a day or 2, and then semi-decent quality (1 packet loss ever 10 minutes or so, 5-10ms jitter).

Airtel gives about 220-230ms to EU and 340-365ms to US
BSNL gives about 195-200ms to EU and 285-330ms to US

However Airtel has slightly less jitter, less outages and better customer support.

Anyway there is really no point in contacting BSNL as far as I know because they do not want the consumers to ever interact with technical people - they view it as an annoyance.

Steer clear of Wifi internet - atrocious for online gaming
steer clear of Cable internet (local cablewallah internet is unreliable and awful)
and lesser known providers like sify are terrible obviously.

You can probably play most mmorpg and RTS type games at a reasonable level. But don't expect to get into hardcore or competitive levels, you'll be held back by the crap internet here.

Online fps is mostly an exercise in frustration unless the servers are in India on an easy to reach route. Then again India has no online gaming community worth mentioning or any interest in it whatsoever.

It's kinda funny that none of the big multiplayer releases like SC2, WoW and MW2 are largely unheard of here.

    O well there you go.

    Totally agree.

Today i approached to NIB room of my BSNL Internet building in kanpur. There I met a senior officer who had good internet knowledge. When I mentioned him about high pings, AAHHHhhhh he was the first person i ever met in BSNL who knew about ping xD

He told me "stay away from the word UNLIMITED, get a limited use plan and you will get your ping problem fixed" when i asked him which plan should i go for, he said "its up to you to find your best plan" (actually he didnt wanted to make a commitment.

Now I m still wandering whether he was right or not. If anyone is using limited usage BSNL plan, please post your ping result here. Please....

    ping these servers
    89.149.254.244 (germany)
    115.124.104.236 (mumbai, india)
    110.159.224.220 (malaysia)
    203.116.28.13 (singapore)

home500c plan checked at 9:50pm all avg values with difference in min & max 2-4ms
    89.149.254.244 (germany)---282ms
    115.124.104.236 (mumbai, india)---82ms
    110.159.224.220 (malaysia)---348ms
    203.116.28.13 (singapore)---321ms

as far as i know bsnl network will not give you good pings for online gaming & it is most probably because of their inefficient international routing.
Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.
Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.
Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

Same values for airtel (I could post for bsnl when i log in there but whitestar's pings are fairly indicative of what they usually are for everyone)

    AIRTEL:
    89.149.254.244 (germany)---359-363ms
    115.124.104.236 (mumbai, india)---69-79ms
    110.159.224.220 (malaysia)---295-306ms
    203.116.28.13 (singapore)---310-321ms

Airtel generally seems to use routings via the pacific to the US.
BSNL generally seems to use routings via europe/atlantic to the US.

as far as i know bsnl network will not give you good pings for online gaming & it is most probably because of their inefficient international routing.
well as you can see Airtel is far worse, so in 95% of the city areas in India there isn't really any other alternative to bsnl/airtel.

Although I would really be interested to see pings from other ISPs.

    Not true at all.

    I'm on UL 750,

    89.149.254.244 (germany)--- around 220 ms
    115.124.104.236 (mumbai, india)-91 ms
    110.159.224.220 (malaysia)-163 ms
203.116.28.13 (singapore)-314 ms It used to be 98ms to singapore.

    @ rsen,

Thanks for the Airtel ping values. Thought it will be much better than BSNL. Rep added
