    Default Broadband Speed issue!

well, I m using BSNL UL900 plan. Since the beginning of this month I m experiencing low internet speed. But I m yet to figure out the reason for the same and what should I do to correct that. I went through some of the threads here in this regard but getting confused a bit. So will be grateful if somebody throw light on my specific problem.
On the modem configuration page (i.e the page which we open through 192.168.1.1) its showing the following data

downstream data rate : 1996 kbps
upstream data rate : 495 kbps
downstream attainable data rate : 17234 kbps
upstream attainable data rate : 855 kbps
    SNR (downstream) : 40.5 dB
    SNR (upstream) : 25.5 dB
Line attentuation (downstream) : 13.0 dB
Line Attentuation (upstream) : 10.0 dB

I did a speed test on speedtest.net also and the results were:

    download speed : 0.22 Mbps
    Upload speed : 0.39 Mbps

what does this mean and what should I do?

    Thnx

    1. What speed are you getting now ? Go to speedtest.net, perform a speed test, post the result here.

    2. This may help

http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...ly-2-mbps.html (4 Mbps connection, but getting only 2 Mbps)

    3. You can also see this if the above link fails

http://www.indiabroadband.net/broadb...onnection.html (How to: get max. speed of a connection)

Saw your comment on this thread. Screen shot is same for XP and Windows 7. If you have any other doubts, feel free to ask.

    4. If nothing works, try talking to the SDE of your exchange.

    Thnx dilip for reply
    1) Right now, after testing speed on speedtest.net, I m getting a download speed of 0.04 Mbps and upload speed of 0.31 Mbps.
I just noticed my this months usage and it is showing as around 15 GB but the problem is that the speed (as per speedtest.net) has been around 0.20 Mbps throughout the month i.e even before it would have crossed the limit of 8gb. Further I just had a significant download of 340 Mb from torrent. Apart from that there is no significant download or upload during the month. My usage details is showing huge uploads since 1st August and that is making me surprised.

    2) well, once the speed of my internet comes back to normal i.e arnd 2 Mbps, I will also then try to get it 4 Mbps.

    3) In that third point, u have a given a link control panel>network and sharing centre............but in windows XP there is no such network and sharing centre. The route to that screenshot must be something different in XP.

    4) I will definitely contact SDE if this doesnt get solved.

I have one more issue i.e many a times the link in my modem goes off and comes back in few secs. Why does this happen?

    Thnx

    1. Use a bandwidth meter from Networx or Shaplus and keep an eye on usage. If upload shows too high, use TCPEye and see which app is using net. Use a good firewall. Which security apps do you use ?

Post the screen shot of usage details page after blackening personal details. Post like as hxxp://domain.com instead of http://domain.com ( there is a restriction for links till you reach 15 posts).

    2. Nice. You never got 4 Mbps ?

    3. Go to network places > select your connection > properties > TCP/IP properties > You will get a similar window.

Also try other options mentioned in the link.

Explain. Does power LED goes off ? What happen to other LEDs ?

    5. Mention modem - model and make. Do you use a WiFi modem ? Checked speed on WiFi ? Is it low even before you reach FUP ?

    hi Dilip,
    1. I downloaded shaplus bandwidth meter 1.3 and m able to see my usage. I noticed that its moving most of the time even if I am not opening any new page. Also when I open few pages usage is moving by 1 mb or 2 mb.
I also downloaded TCPeye but I am not able to follow it. I mean how would I get to know if any other application is using net? Further I doubt that all the movies which are there in my torrent folder is getting uploaded by peers. I mean I dont know how does torrent operates, maybe its because of its peer to peer download system, my usage has gone so high?
I use Quick Heal total security and m very much satisfied with it. In comparison to kaspersky and other security apps, I didnt face any issue in the last 1 yr using quick heal total security.
I am attaching the usage details for this month. Check it out.

    2. I never checked about 4 Mbps. So I dont know. This month its not going to happen. Will check it next month.

    3. I have made the mentioned changes on TCP/Ip pop up. Now will follow the speed to see if there is any improvement in the speed.

No. Power led is not going off. 'Link' LED is going off with other LEDs intact.
I am using Teracom T1-B-DSL699E9.4U6-5 model.
No. I m not using wi-fi. Ya, speed became low before it becoming FUP.

Thnx a lot Dilip. I havent got such a wonderful xplanation in any of the forums I participated till date!

    dilip,
wasnt able to attach screenshot of usage details. Guide me for that also.

For screen shot, check post no.2, 3 of the following link

    http://www.indiabroadband.net/comput...tml#post315289 (Monitor Screen Shot)

    1. Install Networx and see whether upload is happening. It has a graph. In utorrent, select the torrent, right click and " remove ".

    Mention your utorrent version.

    2. Log into the modem and post the SNR and attenuation values.

    Check this link

I have attached the usage details file here.

    1. well, I have removed all the downloads in torrent. One doubt - all my downloads through torrent are stored in download folder which is in My documents. But all of my other downloads (i.e things which I download through other sources) are also stored in the same download folder. So whther all such files are also available/capable of being shared through torrent? (Although I have changed the location of torrent downloads, I just want to know the above thing for knowledge purpose).
    I am using Utorrent 2.2.1

    2. i have mentioned the SNR and attenuation values in the first post here itself. Going by what is given in the link, my modem should be working very fine. Ok, this issue is not bothersome, so i will monitor this thing for some days and if the frequency of disconnection increases, i will do something then.

    3. can you provide me with any link here which discusses wi-fi thing (of bsnl) in detail?

    1. Nice.

No, you can use the same folder for all downloads. Only those downloaded through utorrent and still active on it are allowed to upload. But in my personal opinion, better safe your stuff in some other drive than C. Because if Windows fails and you need to format to reinstall, you will loose all data.

    2. Missed it. Ya, your values seem fine.

You can try talking to someone at exchange. Also ask the line man to check the line. Make sure there are no joints or non insulated parts.

    3. Your modem is a non wifi modem. To use WiFi, you need to either a WiFi router to use with your current modem (costs around Rs. 1,500) or a new modem cum router (Rs. 2,000+, which is a single equipment). Hope this is what you asked. Please let me know if you want any other details.

Which one would u recommend.....router or router cum modem
I will take either of them on rental basis so that if any problem arises lateron I can ask them for replacement.

I opted for a new WiFi modem cum router as I got it for Rs. 80 per month rent and kept the old one as back up. According to reports, BSNL no longer supplies modem, so no chance of getting one on rent (check at your exchange and confirm).

Even using a WiFi router is ok, many people do without any problem.

Here also it is available on rent. I spoke to them last week abt it. But they said that I have to return the existing one as it is also on rental basis.
What is the range of a Wi-fi modem and is there any settings I have to make in my lappy? Also is there any other benefit of getting it installed apart from using it in both pc and lappy?

Nice, mind sharing your location ?

I paid full amount for my first modem, so I have mine with me. You can try talking to them if you like to keep your first modem. I get range all over my house (it is medium sized), not sure about the range in units. Better move the application quickly. From what I know, many circles have stopped supplying modems ?

No, you need not make any settings in your laptop (which OS ?). If modem settings are configured correctly, laptop will automatically detect WiFi. Apart from laptop, you can also use your WiFi enable mobile to connect to internet using your WiFi modem. Some people use this to share files too ( a bit slow though),

Also make sure that you add a password and MAC filter for your WiFi to avoid misuse.

What is the status of your unaccounted usage issue ? Was that due to torrents ? Is it ok now ?

I am moving the application today itself. You mean they are stopping providing wi-fi modems i.e they will only provide the router for wi-fi or they r stopping wi-fi totally?

I have windows 7 home premium in lappy and windows xp in pc.
modem settings exist by default or I have to configure it?
    MAC filter?

I got a call from BSNL people yesterday. They said that usage cannot increase by itself and that I must have used it. Now since I have downloaded the bandwidth meter, I will follow from next month. It may be due to torrents coz there were around 8-9 movies in torrent folder in the first 10 days of the month. So after all the above discussions , I m keeping a close eye. Let see when a new month starts.
Apart from that they are saying the link LEd issue they have corrected. So that also I am following.

One more thing - I did that open DNS thing to increase the speed. But the speed is more or less the same? And I wasnt able to follow that TCPeye thing?

Any advice by any one individual cannot be taken as final.
No one can afford to go on buying graphic cards or laptops to recommend to forum members.

In google search, go for review by CNet/ PCWorld / websites devoted to test new products/ etc.

You should be specific, and state what is your requirement.
for Online gaming videos or movies in HDMI mode.
The type of system you have the display screen etc..

All forums have expert members/professionals/ non technical/laymen
users/ just one laptop/desktop users etc. Advice likely to be different.

And you have opened a new subject in a wrong thread/forum.
    Start a new thread ..

I hope this is not bad advice from THIS forum!!!!

Never intended to start any discussion here on Graphics card. Was just asking for Dilips view on it
But anyways, a discussion already going on the topic in a separate thread. So will continue there.
And ofcourse, no question of it being a bad advice!

I am moving the application today itself. You mean they are stopping providing wi-fi modems i.e they will only provide the router for wi-fi or they r stopping wi-fi totally?

BSNL has already stopped the supply and maintenance of CPE in many circles. That is, you won't get any sort of modem or related equipment from BSNL.

I have windows 7 home premium in lappy and windows xp in pc.
modem settings exist by default or I have to configure it?
    MAC filter?

You need to configure the settings according to BSNL values. From what I heard, BSNL is offering to configure 3 rd party modems according to BSNL settings. But if you are buying from BSNL, you can ask them to configure it to be ready for use. MAC filter is a way of adding additional security to your WiFi. We can discuss it once you buy the modem or you can ask the service engineer to do it for you.

I got a call from BSNL people yesterday. They said that usage cannot increase by itself and that I must have used it. Now since I have downloaded the bandwidth meter, I will follow from next month. It may be due to torrents coz there were around 8-9 movies in torrent folder in the first 10 days of the month. ok

One more thing - I did that open DNS thing to increase the speed. But the speed is more or less the same? And I wasnt able to follow that TCPeye thing?

No matter what you do, you won't get anything more than your plan speed. Open DNS does not increase speed, it makes the page loading faster. Useful if your page takes a very long time to load. Also it can block certain malwares sites too. Try disabling " Auto refresh " in TCP Eye and see. Leave if it is too complicated.

    Hi Dilip,
I just got my wi-fi modem got installed.
Details - They just changed the modem and adaptor, with router remaining the same as it was earlier.
    Modem being ZXDSL531B model.

    Issues:
    1. When they installed it, sites were opening but after few minutes sites stopped opening and my pc is partially getting hanged, in the sense that dial-up is not opening nor i am able to disconnect the line. I am not able to even play any media player. I restarted the system but after few minutes same things are happenning.

    2. You were talking of adding a password to avoid misuse. How to do that?

    Additional details :
    Line rate - upstream : 507 kbps
    Line rate - downstream : 2042 kbps

    Congrats.

Modem on rent or outright purchase ? How much did it cost ? Any info about warranty ?

    1. Presume you are in dialer /bridge mode. Restart PC / modem and check. Switching to bridge is also an option.

    2. Did you check using any WiFi device ? Are you able to connect without any ID or password ? Post a screen shot of your modem's menu page.

Details - They just changed the modem and adaptor, with router remaining the same as it was earlier.
    Modem being ZXDSL531B model.
Is there a separate router ? How many units are there ?

well, first of all I have set the configuration and its working perfectly in my PC. I havent tried it in lappy yet.

I have taken this on rent. So I guess, warranty is there for unlimited period. And I dont think there is any other cost. Will come to know when the next bill comes.

I have set it in PPPoE mode. Any disadvantage over bridging mode?

By router I meant splitter. They didnt change it although they had in their box.

By modems menu page, I guess U meant 'device info' page? R u sure it wont be risky posting a screenshot of it here?

By the way, I read on a website that network authentication (under wireless - security) should be set to 'WPA2-PSK' but its not happenning here and its set to 'open' in my settings. Any idea abt it?
