Are you in bridge / dialer mode ? Mention the error you get. Hope you know how to configure a dialer in Linux. It should work fine in Linux too.

Switch to PPPoE mode. Linux will detect the connection. Tried on Knoppix and Ubuntu.

    Regarding the speed issue

    1. What is the speed you are getting ? Download any file Microsoft and check your speed. Report the same here.

    2. Are you getting 4 Mbps through ethernet cable ?

    3. This may help

http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...ly-2-mbps.html (4 Mbps connection, but getting only 2 Mbps)

    Siemens Nokia 1600 modem/wifi router.
same as Siemens Sl2_141/ WA 3002-g4./Beetel450BXI/ DNA A212-I etc.

2 desktops [XP-sp3] one through wireless adopter & another through Ethernet port.

Confirm both desktops have Windows OS XP /VISTA etc.
One desktop has a WLAN PCI card.
DHCP enabled in the modem ( LAN page )

    2.
Post this in LINUX forum also.
    laptop running on linux
Confirm connecting RJ45 from LAN2 of NS1600. to laptop.
Instructions for setting LINUX may be available in this web site.
    BSNL BROADBAND MAIN MENU
    see attachment.
Basically, you have to create a LAN and WLAN as usual in laptop.
Can you see any other wifi networks ( secured/unsecured ?)
Check Windows equivalent of Ipconfig /all and copy/paste data here.

    Feedback.

PS :I do not know abc of Linux

modem is in PPPoE mode. laptops detects the wifi connection but page doesn't open. same thing happens when connected to modem with crossover cable.

    about speed -
    1. speed i'm getting is ~900kbps , fluctuates a lot , max speed ~1.5mbps
average download speed ~50kbps-80kbps, max ~120kbps; from month of May'11 having this problem. DE internal/external/broadband to DGM broadband, wrote to everyone ,visited them few times, forced them to change the wire, junction box, lift the 2mbps cap, nothing happened. then forced them to do a MDF test in the exchange in my presence and guess what ! in the exchange itself the max speed was 1.4mbps. so they said they have to change the ports etc; on 26thAug they changed the port as i was told but still no change in speed except the connection is more or less steady now @900kbps-1.1mbps. they told me they have opened the port for 4mbps but FTP test shows download speed @180-205kbps so i'm sure its still under 2mbps cap.

    2. in one pc i have crossover cable connected to LAN from modem & in other, USB wireless adopter. speed is somewhat same; winXP-sp3 in both the pcs.

    3. DHCP enabled in modem.

Change laptop to Dialer mode to get connected first in LAN mode.
    confirm.
Try opendns 208.67.220.220 and 208.67.222.222 or google dns 8.8.8.8/ 8.8.4.4
Check MTU value (in WAN page usually) 1492. try lower value
    and recheck Desktops not affected.

    @essbebe & @meetdilip

i have not checked the laptop-linux, let u know as soon as i do.

changed MUT value to 1464, its the highest value that gives continuous reply. already had the open DNS

today they did the MDF test once again but max speed they got is 1.39MBps. they requested me to change the plan. they lifted the 2MBps cap today ,

    downstream rate: ~4900
downstream: ~240 [its too low, even bb-speed tests failed to detect]

another problem is that, although bb-speed test shows similar speed in both the pcs , the pc connected with wireless adopter i dont get a download speed above 50KBps ever.
    got Netgear wg111v3.

tcpipoptimizer also has shown 1464 as best MTU value.

pc with wifi adtopter showing higher BB-speed than the other Lan mode pc. but actual download speed is never higher than 50kbps in wifi-pc.

last night downloaded a 25MB file from microsoft site, avg speed 170kbps.

speed test result for Lan mode pc

they lifted the 2Mbps cap today ,
contact senior technical officers in BSNL Exchange to Change PORT for 4 Mbps speed.

Check in Usage portal how much B/W used last month.

Better to change to U/L plans without speed limits.
    512Kbps ( 64KB/sec)
    a 200MB file in 1 Hour ( approx )
