    Default Wifi connection drop

Hi I am using my wifi modem fr more than 5 years. In all these years it has provided a good service. But from past few months it started causing problems.
    Detail are -

    Setup :
Modem - Huawei Quidway WA1003a wifi
    Ports - 1 USB, 1 ethernet, 1 wifi adapter
    Connection Setup - PPPOE

    Issue :
Unable to browse internet using wifi, though i can open bsnl sites & if a file download is already started at that time, then it still works. Please note at this time only 1 device is connected.

Possible Cause which I found is that unable to set DNS manually in the modem. While using Ethernet I can define the DNS manually in my system, thus it works fine. But in wifi I guess it take the default DNS.
Though in computers wireless adapter also I can manually set DNS but as I go around I don't want to change my dns settings every time. It's kinda frustrating.

    Any suggestions???

    Recheck settings with this link.
    DNS can be auto select.
Enter in Network setting page LAN WLAN.

Is ethernet connection working fine ? Connect your laptop to ethernet and report the status.

What happens when you try WiFi when ethernet is connected to desktop ?

    1. Go to modem menu, set the settings to factory defaults, use the link given above and try reconfigure it.

    2. Ping Google and www.indiabroadband.net and post the results.

    3. Try a hard reset. You will find a small hole (vent like) at the bottom of the modem. Use a ball point pen refill and press hold the reset switch (inside the hole) for say 30 seconds when the modem is ON.

    4. Try an ipconfig/all for your laptop and see which DNS it is using. Hope you changed the DNS in WiFi adapter settings of laptop and not the LAN adapter settings.

    5. Check your laptop on some other WiFi and verify that it is working fine.

    6. If nothing works, (since modem is too old) you may need to get a new modem.

    7. You can also complain here and wait for the BSNL personnel to attend the issue

I have attached some screen shots.
What should I learn/order/understand from the menu items available in the screen shots posted by you ???
Have you given any worthwhile data feedback?

Did you try the Flash mode ?

What happens when you try WiFi when ethernet is connected to desktop ? wifi & ethernet does works simultaneously, but some times the issue mentioned in 1st post occurs, while ethernet works fine

    1. Go to modem menu, set the settings to factory defaults, use the link given above and try reconfigure it. done lots of times

    2. Ping Google and www.indiabroadband.net and post the results. will do it when i reach my home, in morning

    3. Try a hard reset. You will find a small hole (vent like) at the bottom of the modem. Use a ball point pen refill and press hold the reset switch (inside the hole) for say 30 seconds when the modem is ON. done lots of time in these 5 years

Hope you changed the DNS in WiFi adapter settings of laptop and not the LAN adapter settings. will post it in morning , as i said earlier that i don't wanna change again n again my dns settings in wifi adapter, as i got to different places where i connect different wifi connections (not bsnl's)

    5. Check your laptop on some other WiFi and verify that it is working fine. it does works fine, using it in my office without any issue, used it in many hotels, it works fine there too, its not a laptop issue, as my phone faces the same issue

    6. If nothing works, (since modem is too old) you may need to get a new modem. it did struck in my mind

    7. You can also complain here and wait for the BSNL personnel to attend the issue useless , making them understand about my issue will take hours , happened with me in many cases , not going to waste my time on this. they provide good service, but if you gonna talk about any issue. then only god can save you

You need not change your DNS settings of WiFi adapter just because you are connecting to a different ISP. Most ISPs allow using a third party DNS like Open DNS or Google DNS.

Ping Google and www.indiabroadband.net and post the results. will do it when i reach my home, in morning

    Ok

If you are willing to spend around 5K, I'd suggest to go for a new modem. Nowadays, it is easier to hack a modem than hacking a Windows/Linux/Mac OS, mainly because the modem makers do not update their firmware as frequently as their desktop counterpart.

luckily this time it works fine. Also, found that it's taking up the modem ip as DNS. Changed DNS to the following ones -
    218.248.240.181
    218.248.255.161

works fine in my home. need to test it in my office.

You can check which DNS has been selected here.

    Recheck settings with this link.
    DNS can be auto select.
Enter in Network setting page LAN WLAN.
I had posted you the link for screen shots. you could have mentioned that in the menu pages there is no DNS selection. Searched in google/and other forums, and there is no proper answer.
Instead you could have posted the STATUS page. screen shot.
Hope i will remember this next time someone else raises same query/problem.This thread will be referred.

In above system log entries , DNS has been selected from TCP/IP page
possibly. If you select obtain DNS address automatically, modem will get tthe DNS internally, i presume.
    Check with ipconfig /all

Check Ipconfig /all in both conditions.

In network settings page in Both LAN and WLAN try above.
    update:
Checked. DNS servers in ipconfig /all will show 192.168.1.1 if auto dns is selected.

    DNS both New Delhi BSNL.

True, it is possible to get a good modem for less than 5000 too. That figure just came off top of my head.

Let us see whether the system Computer can be tweaked.

(1)Download Ccleaner from FileHippo.com - Download Free Software
( not the latest not installing for me ) and use it.
Clears all cache/temporary files / registry entries / old System restore points etc and saves Hard disk space.
    (defragmentation will take hours !!!)

Check speed now here ( as a test site )
    http://mybroadbandspeed.co.uk

    (2)Download tcp/ip optimizer from SpeedGuide.net :: The Broadband Guide
    Recheck speed.

    (3)
Use other browsers: Firefox or Operal or Google Chrome.
i find IE9 also equally fast.
    (4)
delete all unneeded resident applications from Startup menu.
( Ccleaner has this menu item also )

    give feedback.

Even I otherwise I dont save passwords,"delete all on Exit" in all browsers, save 1 day history only.CCCleaner does all at once.
