Default When will we be as advanced as PAKISTAN?

What is wrong with our country? When will we be able to use things like Netflix and Hulu and Youtube. When will we be able to ditch discs and buy games and softwares using directdownload? Cloud computing is pretty much on the horizon and don't even dream about something like that. Your Broadand bill should be over 1 lac per month if that comes. When can a person paying Rs1500 a month not have to look at that bloody buffering screen on Youtube?
It is just us who are left behind in this age of the internet where every single device from TVs to Bluray players to phones connect to the internet with thousands of features which we can't use, because we were born in this beautiful country. Ah streaming, I read about this a few years back where streaming is believed to be the next big thing. They say BDs and DVDs and discs are all to be obsolete in a few years. Why don't the developed countries think of what will happen to us?
Hell even Pakistan is way ahead of us.
    PAKISTAN :
    2Mbps Full unlimited(No FUP) Rs1500 pm
    4Mbps Full unlimited(No FUP) Rs2000 pm
    SINGAPORE:
    6Mbps Full unlimited(No FUP) Rs1450 pm
    10Mbps Full unlimited(No FUP) Rs1800 pm
    INDIA :
NO FUP, aisa nai hota bhaiyya.
I was going to show more countries but it just got too depressing. Do you people think this will ever change or will the a&&holes at BSNL, Airtel, Reliance,MTNL and TATA with support from the pathetic and corrupt TRAI always keep us in the DARK AGE for Broadband.

I would rather worry about good roads, 24 hour power and water supply than 2 Mbps unlimited.

The roads, power and water supply in Pakistan are Flawless I hear. And no other problems at all, although some may say that the country is falling apart Politically, Economically, Security wise.

I second that. A world without Piracy would be beautiful. The prices will come down automatically if everyone is buying things rather than stealing them.

In that case, life supporting medicines would be the cheapest. Higher the demand, higher the price.

We cannot compare our country with other countries which give high speed at low price. We have a bigger population that most of them and are very vast. To set up infrastructure is not easy and will cost billions. India being a poor country and considering that even mobiles are just 5 years old, we should give some time. People believe that Maran had great plans for telecom sector (though I now believe for his own benefits), but the political set up is also not very development supporting in India. But a country with a lot of regional and ethnic groups this united is a great achievement.

Beautifully said. I agree with you completely on the population front and it was at the back of my mind too. But I am more disappointed in the government rather than the companies. Tough laws to tackle piracy and corruption are essential. Absolutely nothing is done against piracy in our country and pirated stuff is openly sold in markets and on streets. No wonder Bollywood can never match Hollywood on the budget front, and the hypocritical public will buy 5 Bollywood movies for Rs20 and say "Hollywood aur Bollywood ka koi comparison hi nai hai". Tum paise doge toh wo acche picture banaige na. And as far as corruption goes, I am sure Mr Raja, Kalmadi and Amar Singh can contribute a bit for upgrading the Infrastructure. The money is there sir, but not being used for it.

Piracy is a bad thing. In India film piracy is controlled by Dcompany. But I am least concerned about it. Especially the over influence of money in education sector and health sector denying quality service and chances to normal man may be a bigger concern. I don't mind if film producers loose a few crores or people pirate Windows if government can attend other issues effectively.

Ah yes, but you contradict yourself there. Not many care if the Producers lose money but what about the fact that almost every penny earned through piracy is being used by the Dcompany to fund terror attacks in our own country.
To everyone here, you may not want to accept this but the biggest source of income for major terror groups in the world is Piracy. Next time u download a free mp3, remember that the site is most probably going to spend the money it makes to bomb Delhi and Mumbai( This is a fact)

In fact, Dcompany is not only involved in piracy but they produce films too. They have control over most of the easy money making ways in this country. As we know they have support and safe haven in our neighbouring state. Let us hope government will learn something from Mossad.

Below data plans are of an Indian ISP. Although they are with FUP but you can compare them with above plans (atleast from Pakistan).

water supply is so good that it flows on roads and their president asks for help from international community every year.

What you gave is a lone ISP only operational in Hyderabad. I don't think that counts.

OP you bring up some valid points, but simply mentioning pakistan in any discussion is liable to just get you flamed.

It's probably better to compare India with similar nations that are populous possibly democratic and not failed states like pakistan. Perhaps even china. It's probably best to compare India with south east asian countries but then again people will bring up the "o but we have a huge population" argument.

However all this being said internet in India is abysmally bad. Even sub-saharan african countries and other failed states like pakistan or central/south america have better internet.

The main reason for this is peculiar government policies primarily motivated by a perceived lack of need for high speed and/or reliable internet.
The government is also of the notion that extracting every last drop from the very small paying internet user base serves national interests better than encouraging better/faster internet with cheaper bandwidth and investment in internet infrastructure. Maybe it does in the short term. Long term advances from better internet are hard to predict and typically ignored.

To be fair to the government, there really isn't that much of a demand for good internet in India, probably 95% or more users use the internet to just check emails and facebook; and for that dialup is more than sufficient.

There are almost no internet enabled services in India - or at least nowhere near the level of other countries - most IT work that happens in India is service for *other* developed countries. Online trading, e-commerce, stock trading, auctioning, VoIP, video conferencing, online banking is mostly non-existent.

If the internet goes down or doesn't work properly people barely notice. In other countries their world comes to a standstill. India is a good 50+ years behind everyone else, probably 20-30 years behind china and South east asia.

Until other things improve like the infrastructure, per capita income and more specifically the actual use of internet enabled services; internet in India won't improve since there really isn't any demand for it.

Don't expect rapid progress in 1 sector ignoring other possibly more important sectors (healthcare/education/rural reform/agriculture/low-medium tech manufacturing, transportation, power reform, subsidies for the poor) like you would see in China or semi-failed states like Pakistan.

Well I guess you could expect rapid progress where there is a massive profit expectancy like mobile telephony or 3g/4g which simply isn't there for internet, at least in India.
