Exclamation Configuring DataOne on Airtel220bx - new thread

Hi Friends,
I happened to be in Hyderabad where I had Airtel connection and very happy with it. I relocated to kolkata, found there is no support for Airtel in my location and asked for BSNL dataone. I got my connection in no time, but I did not take the modem since I already have the Airtel modem with me. Since I tried to configure the modem using the tips given here in a thread, I could not connect to internet. All the time the PC/USB light and the power light glowed where the link LED glowed rarely, but there was to light in the Data LED. I have tried both the method described here with no avail! Please let me know if anyone can support this issue, or I have to spend 1800/ to buy a BSNL modem!!!

are you connected to Internet now ?

Open IE type 192.168.1.1/main.html select Diagnostics
and report the problem. ( presume you have Beetel 220Bx)
I have posted the screen shot recently in Airtel forum.

Exclamation

Dear esbebe,
Thanks for the reply. I am not connected to the internet still! I was doing some R&D meanwhile. I borrowed my friends BSNL modem and it is working fine.
I noticed that the link LED was blinking seldom, but heard that if the line is OK, or my modem is OK, then it will glow constantly. I do not remember what used to happen in my airtel connection. Was it constantly glowing or blinking! Can you please let me know as you seem to have a current Airtel connection.
For a BSNL modem, if the modem is OK and connection is ON, it should be constantly glowing.
I think my modem is faulty and I am looking for a indicom modem (as I took indicom connection also afterwards) to troubleshoot. It will come late this month
Meanwhile can you give the peice of info which I asked for?

Thanks again for your notice on this unnoticed thread

BTW, I saw your post and screenshot in the post mentioned. I will get a sc and paste over here, since i dont have it now.
Can you please let me know the settings of your modem?
It askes for username and password in modem settings which is not in case of BSNL modems. Do I need to create a new connection from network connections once I have given the uname and pwd in modem?

I will post the screen shots. For your sake I reprogrammed my Airtel connection to DATAone in Beetel 220Bx. Working fine.
BSNL modems also need ID and Password for always on PPPoe connection.
VPI 0 VCI 35 rest almost same like Airtel
Yes enter user Id essbebe ( No @dataone.in)
IN DNS uncheck automatic dns and enter openDNs
208.67.222.222 and 208.67.220.220.
After SAVE/Reboot Dont Rush. Wait for at least two to three minutes and then open a web page.

Default authentication failure

Hi Essbabe,

Tried all the steps that you have listed out. At the end of it all, after rebooting the modem, the DATA light remians off and WAN status shows as "Authentication Failure". I again called BSNL help desk and had my password re-set; but, so far, no luck getting it to work.

Hi Essbebe,
I think I have the authentication pass, but all others are FAIL! In diag mode, I can see ethernet connection and authentication is PASS. I have given the DNS values and that seems to get an edge because now, frequently the amber light glows, but the link light glows for bout 5sec and gone!
I have reset the modem and again applied the settings, but to no avail.

Sometimes I get Test ADSL sync as PASS, but only for 5sec

Below are the device info:

Is it because of the OS? I am using XP and I do have another WIN2k3... I am thinking to get the 2k3 installed afresh and try again!
I think you are using 2k3...right?

But my amber light is not glowing steadily.. I think the problem might be with splitter. I will first try to get my hands on a new splitter, and then probably..if all fails.. I have to roll out 1800K to buy a new modem!!!

Essbebe asked me to look into the LAN Card... if it is working properly. I will see the device info from device manager.. but I think it was ok..as far I remember.. It was showing Realtec NIC interface and all...
Then also I was adviced to uncheck automatic DNS for modem and check automatic DNS from LAN tcp/ip properties and do all sort of combinations. I will do that too and report back tomorrow.
If my LAN card is faulty, I will go to USB mode.
Lets see.... what happens!
I had a tata indicom modem also back in hyderabad, which I have ordered back to kolkata. It will arrive EOW, but it was only the modem... no splitter. I will check with that too!
WHY THE HELL IS MY LINK LED NOT STEADY???

Best Idea : Go to BSNL telephone Exchange and get a modem on rent only Rs 60/pm.
They give you the modem fully programmed for your ID always on connection.
.

Test your Internet connection works ok. Then try Beetel or Tata modem etc.
Get connected. There could be telephone line trouble. Noisy. Remove the connections and check for oxidisation( blackness etc )

quote Why the xxxx is my link LED Not steady Unquote
Splitter : Any splitter will do no special splitter for each ISP.
From the splitter ONLY the PHONE and parallel phones cordless etc MUST be connected Also check up whether the good old static filter is in your telephone junction box and bypass it.

what is a static filter? I have seen this warning in modem diag help page too! The telephone line comes to a white box (1 input, 1 output)and then to my splitter. Is it a static filter?? If so, I have to bypass this and send the line directly to the splitter?
Anyway, I borrowed my friends BSNL modem (probably mt841) and it worked fine with USB and that white box on! It got me connected very fine.

NO. There will be a small pcb with condenser/resistance20Kfor a RJ11 socket. May be in your house old installation. (sort of lightning filter).

Awaiting report on your Lan card ! with borrowed MT841
Now try Beetel220Bx in your friend's computer. Change to his ID and password.

No PCB present. I guess that means no static filter also!
Anyways, I borrowed the BSNL modem from my friend on prev weekend! It worked fine, but it was on USB. So, no LAN interface!
I think I might switch to USB on my 220bx, but that would need a protocol change since PPoE will not do..since no ethernet. It that case which protocol should I use? Bridging? Bridging does not require username and pwd in the modem. So i will be setting up a dialler also.
Am I correct?

Yes. I have not tried the USB of Beetel 220Bx. I tried zyxel,USB and used dialup in another computer.
When you use USB No ethernet card required.

Welcome to Beetel Modems
From Airtel guide for beetel220Bx Combo Modem
Quote :In case of USB port of the combo modem is being used, please install the hardware drivers as specified in instruction manual in Driver CD.. Then follow steps 1 to 12 for configuration of modem
Unquote
Usual steady steps !!!! and at step 9 select PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE) etc
so no dial up required.
