    Default 192.168.1.1 not opening

    Hi,
I want to change my wifi password, but when i go on to the ip 192.168.1.1 nothing opens, not even an error page is displayed, i tried it both ways wired as well as wifi wireless, the page doesn't open. Earlier the page used to open, has BSNL recently changed its policy or something? I called 1504, the BSNL broadband helpline which no one picks up, so i called 1500, which i guess connects me to the nearest BSNL exchange, they told me to call 12678, so i did, there they told me that wifi password cannot be changed which is a total bullshit answer, anyway on further inquiry they told me that their engineer will call me back, i don't think that will happen, so i am looking for an answer here, how do i change my password for BSNL type 2 wifi router?

    Thanks

Smile apparently i was wrong in assuming BSNL wont respond

hi essbebe, thanks for your reply i am checking the links you provided,

apparently i was wrong in assuming that no reply will come from BSNL, their engineer just called and said he will come and do the settings, although i still wonder as to why the 192.168.1.1 site is not working

Please update the thread , when BSNL engineer visits your house and sets up the connection. details welcome.
Ask/request him to back up the settings to your hard disk for future use.

I reproduce your comments here, :
thanks for the quick reply, however, maybe because i am lazy, i found the info in the links you provided, to be toooo lengthy, and bothersome, maybe it is also because BSNL has such a disorganised and complicated system of various makers of modems

    Default comment rep

    Hi essbebe,
I +1 you because you replied so fast, and for that i am thankful. However i added my comment, to explain to you what i thought, i don't know why that has upset you, i +1 you after all, how can a +1 be bad? I thought my comment would be helpful to you as to how those who you help see your instructions, that's all man

Well apparently i was wrong in assuming that i was wrong in assuming that the BSNL engineer will not come and solve the problem. Lulz, let me explain, i initially said the engineer will not come, then the engineer called and said he is coming, so i posted that i was wrong in my initial assumption, then the BSNL engineer did not come and instead a call came, they tried to do some settings over the phone, they asked me to enter IP addresses in the ipv4 settings instead of "obtain ip address automatically", well that did not work, so now they are sending the engineer and it is uncertain as to when he will come. So i am going back to my initial assumption - BSNL is not equipped to solve this problem as satisfactorily and as quickly as any ISP can and should. Damn my choice in going for BSNL.

Now Bsnl engineers are also useless !!! according to you.

Does this condition apply to you ?
    condition 1:
Internet connection is working. type this link.
myIPaddress.com: What is my IP address? How do I find my IP address?
You will get your present Dynamic Ip address.
Retype it in address bar. ( example 117.xx.xx.xx)

Then you may get a window like this (picture 18 months old!)

Could you access Modem menu pages ?.

    feedback.

Default ok now the settings page is opening

i don't know why it is opening today when it wasn't opening yesterday, but anyway, now i need help in changing the password

being the noob that i am, i am afraid of tinkering around with any of the 100s of options and menus on this BSNL modem/router settings page

i am sure the place to change the password is in the MAIN PAGE >> WIRELESS NETWORK MENU >> SECURITY SETTINGS SECTION >> WEP PASS PHRASE TEXT FIELD

but as i said, since i am doing this for the first time i want confirmation that this is indeed the right place to change the password. Also is there a minimum length of the password or can i even keep a 4 digit pass?

    Thanks

At times switch off and switch ON the modem will do the trick may be that is the case here.

    @ kbx911

Yes, but it would have been nice if you provided the modem model and make. We could give the exact menu path and terms. If in doubt, you can also post a screen shot of your wireless page (blacken personal details).

Also WEP encryption is easily crackable. You can try WPA2. Settings are almost the same.

    Default Model Make

Manufactured by VMC, Model AN1020-21, picture is attached.

Please guide me with the menu options. Also a couple of doubts:
    1) will the router/modem settings page open only when wired or even on wireless (wifi)?
    2) do i have to set a 13-14 digit password or can i set even smaller one like 4 digits?
    3) The BSNL engineer came and set it to WEP, should i go for WPA2? Maybe changing this setting will hamper the connection to the laptop and tablet. Right now on the WEP setting both the devices automatically & easily connect when in range. If i shift to a more secure WPA2 setting, maybe it would not connect so easily?
    4) The laptop catches the wifi well even in the other room, but the tablet Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 keeps losing the signal at the same distance. Does this mean the laptop wifi-card Atheros AR5B97 is better than the tablet wifi equipment?

Thanks for answering my noob queries.

Default found some answers on my own

    Hi,
Sorry for asking doubt #1 above, it got clear to me automatically when i typed in the 192.. address when on wifi

actually it works only on wifi, because when i opened the 192... page on wired it was not showing the current password, which is what i wanted to see in the first place had forgotten it you see so now i know that the 192... settings page works on both wired as well as wifi, better on wifi actually, and my settings are set very badly 64 bit encryption etc, which i should immediately shift to 128 atleast, or if you can quide me about the WPA2, it would be great, coz it seems that it has multiple fields for settings and maybe required a very long key/phrase.

    Thanks

    Better enter a strong password

    3) The BSNL engineer came and set it to WEP, should i go for WPA2? Maybe changing this setting will hamper the connection to the laptop and tablet. Right now on the WEP setting both the devices automatically & easily connect when in range. If i shift to a more secure WPA2 setting, maybe it would not connect so easily?

Before you attempt anything, take a Back up of current modem settings (use the last option of LHS menu). You can simply use the Restore option (again available in the last option of LHS menu) and get back old settings.

Changing to WPA2 doesn't affect other settings. You just need to enter the new password in your machines.

    4) The laptop catches the wifi well even in the other room, but the tablet Galaxy Tab GT-P1000 keeps losing the signal at the same distance. Does this mean the laptop wifi-card Atheros AR5B97 is better than the tablet wifi equipment?

Think so. You can try a WiFi booster, check this guide

You can find many DIY guides on Google.

    Default thank you all

well thank you essbebe and meetdilip, most of my doubts are resolved, but i do regret having purchased the modem/wifi-router from bsnl, but hey atleast it came cheap, i bet other better N series ADSL routers must be more expensive compared to this BSNL branded thing. Btw which is the best wifi modem one can use for BSNL (i.e. ADSL type), is there something great for under 3k?

You can easily get a good N type modem cum routers from Netgear, Belikin or Dlink in that range.
