Modem model#UT300R2U
Power supply:10V dc--550mA
I had problems accessing the internet, was told that the modem is fine but I need to replace the adapter. BSNL will not help in buying an adapter since it is already past the warranty period.
As a temporary measure I started using an old adapter used for a wireless router (Fairway;5Vdc--2.5A) but after a few months the lamps in the modem would frequently turn on,turn off...
BSNL advises to use a 10Vdc--550mA adapter.I go to a shop(Mercy electronics, anna nagar, chennai) and buy the specified adapter for 290 bucks, without a warranty! When I tried to plug it in fumes start spewing from the socket with a noise like that of a short circuit...
I take it back to the vendor, but it seems to work just fine at the shop.Modem was on for a full 10 mins without any noise/fumes from the socket. I take it back home and start using the adapter, one fine morning(in a matter of 2 days) there is no power supply at all to the modem!
I take the adapter back to the vendor,he checks the volts using a meter and says adapter is just fine and says it is the modem that isnt working!!
I said that the modem was already checked by the BSNL guys and ask him for a fresh adapter. All I get to hear was, "Sorry but you'll have to pay for it as the old adapter(ONLY ONE WEEK OLD) has no warranty((. In a fit of rage, I abandon the adapter at the shop and start hunting for a good one with warranty, but returned home with a lot of ill-luck
Now there is another problem.Wherever I ask for the adapter and check it then and there with my modem, there simply seems to be no power supply at all to the modem and I get to hear "Modem is not in working condition!" Only myself and the BSNL guys know that the modem is working.
So much so I went to same Mercy electronics but at a different branch (aminjikarai, chennai) where the guy pulled out the same adapter make saying, "175 bucks"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! and i paid more than double at the other branch((((((((((
but then since there was no supply to the modem, he said,"you can buy the modem from us,for 1200 bucks".
I come back home, all exhausted, but start fiddling around with the 5V Fairway adapter. Now browsing with intermittent breaks in the connection(a frustrating several breaks but am getting used to it).
Any comments/advice/suggestions?
