Angry 8-9 MB per hour usage.. Linksys Router Problem!!

    Hi,

I use a linksys router 120N.. I use networx to check the usage and in hourly based stats, I see that the usage is around 8 to 9 MB when I've not even touched the PC!!

I usually keep the pc on all the time, so 8-9 MB would make around 160MB a day if the PC is on for 20 hours. This is so annoying.. Last month, the usage was around 4.5 GB When normally, it is around 2.5 to 2.7 GB before getting the router. Besides, I got this router in the mid September.

I even checked 'Task manager' to see that its downloading something at constant rate. Not sure if its download... Because torrents are off, android device is off, wifi is password protected. I've posted the pic of the graph.. This was just for 2-4 mins and around 2 MB transfer.

But when I disconnect the router and use only modem, the line is flat!! Absolutely no downloading.
    Please help!

    1. Right click Netwrox icon in system tray > Settings > Post the screen shot of " Main " tab.

Choose the proper adapter and check. Is the same usage reflected on your BSNL usage portal ?

    2. How many PC / laptop do you use other than desktop and Android device ?

    3. Do you keep browser open with a lot of tabs when the system is idle ? Even though you keep it idle there will be some amount of data transfer.

    4. Install Shaplus / Bitmeter Bandwidth meter and counter check the values.

    5. Use a good firewall and set ports in stealth mode. Report the result.

    6. Any specific reason to keep the connection ON all the time ? The simplest and good method to save power and router life is to switch off modem / router when not in use. Some UPS has USB communications options. You can set to shut it down by scheduling on PC. Connect the modem / router to it and it will be switched off automatically.

    2. No other devices at all.

    3. All browsers, software closed. Yet I see data being transferred.

    4. Task Manager gives the most accurate usage and is same as the bsnl usage portal.

    5. Sorry, I didn't get what you meant. :|

    6. I do switch it off, but most of the time I'm reading on the internet or e-books. Even today, from morning I've been reading e-book with all browsers closed and already 120 MB usage. :-/ About switching off modem/router, even when i shut down the system, the modem/router is still on.. 24x7. I've to either unplug it or switch of the modem, but router doesn't have a power button.

Also, one of the lights on the router is always blinking as if sth is being transferred, in the same way the internet light on modem blinks when data is being transferred. (But here only the router light blinks but not modems.)

when you said torrents were off did you mean they were stopped or simply paused or program was exited.

This is from "what is transferring?" software...

Each second so much amount of data is being transferred from same IP. Its in sync with the router light blink.

    1. Mention your OS. Hope you have automatic updates disabled.

    2. Which firewall do you use ? Most have an " Internet Lock " facility. Try it and report the result. Use the following guide if you need help

http://www.indiabroadband.net/softwa...selection.html (IBF guide for Free Firewall selection)

    3. Do you have a password set to WiFi ? If yes, WEP, WPA2, which one ? Use MAC Filter White list and check.

In Networx settings, set " Monitored Interfaces " as " All Ethernet connections ". Also " select " Ignore local traffic within LAN " When you check in task manager, did it show the same reading as Networx ?

    1. Windows 7 and yes, it is disabled.

    2. Kaspersky Internet Security( I'll find about Internet lock and post it soon )

    3. WPA/WPA2 PSK

I ignored the local traffic, and now netwox is not showing the usage.. but task manager still has the same graph as posted.

Ok. Seems like it is local packet transfer between PC and router and not with ISP.

always verify data usage from bsnl portal first because the bill will be made on that basis alone.on a side note why not use an auto exiting command for utorrent or LAN disable command(preferred) to stop download after 8AM.

Hope your connection is reset in some way at 8 am. You can keep the PC ON and idle (no browser, no antivirus /firewall, no torrent, no Windows update) and keep it running for say 6 hours. Check BSNL portal whether it is updated there. If it is not, it is certainly internal traffic and nothing to worry about.
