Question contant stream of upload data!!!!!!

    hey,
tired of not being able to see my usage online on the portal,i switched to using netmeter(bandwidth monitoring tool).to my surprise i found out that there is a constant upload data stream of 3 to 5 kBps(kilo Bytes per second),even when i turn off all web applications.
that means that all the time the modem is turned on ,it uploads 15 MB of data
    per hour.
adding to that i recently switched to a 500c (1.5 MB free usage)home plan from an unlimited one.
which gives me 50MB day free usage and looking at this within three hrs my day usage is gone in uploading.
DO I NEED TO WORRY ABOUT A MAMMOTH BILL AT THE END OF THE MONTH?
DOES THIS UPLOAD DATA COUNT IN THE UNBILLED USAGE ON THE ONLINE PORTAL TOO?

please help!!!....there is no way for me to compare the readings.

    additional details:
i confirmed the data with shaplus bandwidth meter too.
this is my first month with the 500c plan(1.5 GB free usage)

First we need to find out whether this is a local data transfer or indeed some program accessing internet. If latter, there is every reason for you to worry.

    Please mention

    1. Modem - model and make. Does it have WiFi ? Have you set a password for that ?

    2. Which OS do you use ? How many system do you have ? Does all have this issue ?

    3. Do you use a firewall ? Mention the security tools you use.

    4. Do you use torrents ? Was it closed while you checked the readings ? I mean closed ?, not that no downloading is taking place.

    5. Do you have any Windows or antivirus update running ? Disable it and check.

    6. Install Networx, in settings, choose " Ignore local traffic within LAN " and check.

    7. If nothing works, simply use a good firewall and enable internet lock when not using net. If using Comodo Firewall or similar, you can see which program is accessing net and which IP. Simply block it.

You can use this guide if you need help with firewall selection

http://www.indiabroadband.net/softwa...selection.html (IBF guide for Free Firewall selection)

    Feedback.

    Thanks,
    for responding so quickly

i will move straight to point 6,
the upload stream goes away, when i click "ignore local traffic within LAN." on Networkx
does that mean i am safe.

and if yes? why do other softwares like shaplus show false data (no judging).

    other details:
    1. Modem-SIEMENS c2110,no WIFI.single system.
    2. Windows XP OS (highly shrinked version with no windows updates or firewall),one system.
    3. no firewall,Kaspersky antivirus.
    4. no torrentz
    5. no updating of any kind.

    Thanks Again..

There will be some amount of communication between router and PC causing data transfer (local). This is normally is not counted by ISP. But to make sure, try this (my post for a similar problem).

http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...tml#post343049 (8-9 MB per hour usage.. Linksys Router Problem!!)

As you can see there is no feedback on that thread. Hope you can confirm it is not counted by ISP (if that is the case).

are you using networx version 5.1.8 or above?i installed v 5.1.9 two days ago & noticed a constant dl/ul of 1.3KBps.i switched back to version 5.1.7 & problem was gone.i don't check the "ignore local traffic within lan" because then it shows data usage lower than what is shown in BSNL portal.this is probably because of exclusion of packet overhead data transfer between modem & PC.i currently use networx v5.1.7 & even with ignore local network traffic unchecked i get 0 ul/dl rate or 10-12bytes for 1-2 seconds sometimes.

i guess there is no need for that ,as i hve already confirmed data with shaplus bandwidth meter and netmeter ,all giving exactly the same result.
    thnx for trying though...

i have virtually stopped using internet during the day,and planning on switching back to the unlimited plan as theres no way out .
making things worse, now can i can also see a download stream of 4-5 kBps and sometimes more.
Is there a way i can find out which application is using the given data.
Is it possible that someone hacked to use my free quota.

    Thnx in advance..

If you don't use Internet connection in Day time, and modem is OFF, say between 0800AM & 1800PM
next day check in your usage portal how much data has been downloaded !!!!
This confirm someone has "Hacked" your connection.

Are you in a flat complex where the Phone junction is easily
    accessible ?

anyone can take a parallel connection from your Telephone linesay 2345678 and knowing your USERID/PW connect to your Broadband any time ( when you are not connected )
CHANGE PASSWORD. in your selfcare portal.
    (2).
If you are already connected to BB , "hacker" also cannot connect.
    (3)
If hacker was already connected you wont get connected !!

    (4)
Use DIALER MODE ( select "Bridged" in modem WAN page )
Switch off Modem when not required.
    (5)
If you are in "Always ON" PPPoE mode ( userid/PW entered in
modem WAN page ) and if you keep the, system idle ( computer + modem ) , there is a "HANDSHAKE" traffic between modem andBsnl DSLam ( say server ) checking whether connection is active or not.

This is the traffic any Net meter will miss.

    6.
    Press CTL+ALT+DEL and check applications/processes
    running.

    Which firewall is used ?

    7. You can also check traffic details in your modem shown as bytes. usually.

Use Comodo Firewall. It allows you to view which program is connected to net (from main panel itself) and to which IP. You can either suspend that particular application or net access as a whole with a single click. You can also block any application permanently from accessing net.

Before that, use the link I posted and confirm BSNL is recording this usage.
