Default Usage Checking and Auto Connect for PPPoE conection with ZTE Modem

    Hi,

I recently bought a ZXDSL 531B model from BSNL. As I have both laptop and desktop in my house, I had to go for WiFi modem.

To setup multiuser facility, I had to change the connection type to PPPoE from Bridging. Due to this, when I switch on modem, internet got connected.

    • Is there any way out to avoid this auto connection even after using PPPoE?

I am facing another problem. Earlier, When I used to connect using bridging, after connection a network icon used to appear at bottom right corner of my screen. I used double click on that and id pops up a window showing current connection usage. Now due to PPPoE that icon is not appearing.

    • Is there any way out to check usage for current session after using PPPoE connection type?

    Regards

You need to use PPPoE if you intend to connect more than one system at the same time independent of others.

    1. You can get the icon in PPPoE too. Just select your network adapter and check its properties. You can enable it there.

    2. You can alternatively use a bandwidth meter like Shaplus, Networx or Bitmeter.

    Thanks Dilip.

To Track the current session usage, I can also use the networking tab of task manager. I was trying different items and got this.

But I really haven't got any way to get rid of auto connection for PPPoE.

Are you sure you want to change to dialer mode ? If so, you won't be able to connect more than one system or use WiFi.

No I wouldn't. As laptop is used by others and desktop by me, I have to go with PPPoE all the time.

Still searching if there is any way to manual connect for PPPoE.

May I know what is troubling you in PPPoE ? Using PPPoE mode for around 2 years now, find it much better than dialer. Saves you the trouble of clicking the dialer and then waiting for it to connect. I switch ON my PC and modem at the same time and by the time PC boots up, internet is ON.

You need not worry about paying for net while not using. Unless automatic updates are not running, an idle system connected through PPPoE will cost you nothing. Let me know you have any further queries on this.

Only problem is to check the usage for current session.

In dialer mode, I used to check this by clicking on the networking icon at bottom right icon which comes after success full dial.

Install Shaplus Bandwidth meter in all machines you use. It will give the data you are looking for. It is very simple, accurate and quite light. Make sure that you choose the correct adapter from Shaplus settings.

You can use NetworX also. The first screen shot in Post No 8
is a facility available in Networx.

    Hi,

I am facing another problem for WiFi range. Even outside of the room where the modem is hosted, signal strength is not excellent.
But I have to use this from another floor, where signal strength is always showing as poor.

Please let me know, whether I should by another modem from DLINK\LinkSys or I should buy a range extender.

    Regards

or I should by a range extender.
    1.
Which model/make you have selected ??
    2.
Be specific and mention the height and radius of wifi activity
    involved .
Any possibility of locating the ZTE ZXDSL5311B at the higher location?
    is it second floor)?
Probable Height AMGL 20 to 25 feet.
    3.
You can buy a similar model ( preferably) & use WDS/WDM mode.
or another standalone WIFI router and use Rj45 cable to enable wifi
    in new location .

Check here: Choosing a wifi router.

    Oops!!! Buy - By....
    Changed that in that post.

Anyway, I am not actually very good at comp networking. I am not very used to of terms like AMGL or WDS or WDM. I am really sorry for that.

I have not selected any range extender. I got this from some website that range extenders may resolve my problem. Though I am not very sure about that.

However, to summarize, Modem located at 1st floor and laptop at 2nd. So it will not possible to locate modem at higher location.

    Regards
    Suman
