Unhappy BSNL Data Problems. How to track ?

    Hi..
We have a 8mbps line on office, which is connected to the router and then from router, it goes to a Dlink switch and our 15 employees computers are connected.

For the first few months, it never crossed 30GB even, but since 3 months, its coming around 80-90GB each month.

    Im not sure, whats happening.

Is there a way, I can track or limit the user systems ?

Is Network Server a solution ?

    Can it help ?

    Im ready to invest.

    Yes that one.

    Wireless is disabled.

Bcz, this router is connected to Netgear WGR 614 router.
Then a port from the router goes to Dlink switch.

    1. Wifi is enabled on Netgear , since the iOS devices are connected to Wifi.

    2. The internet input to the router comes from the Modem . So, we have 4 LAN ports on the router now as free ports. We have connected the Switch's output to one LAN and the other LAN to my iMac and PC.

    3. Yes similar LAN. Whats the question ? I have never heard about different kind of LAN ports.

Default Is there a way, I can track or limit the user systems ?

    012: Probable System configuration:

Bsnl Phone junction ===>>AR800V3 ( wifi disabled)
    WLAN A:
AR800v3===>wgr614 wifi~~ enabled ===>> systems quantity not known ( say LAN A WIFI mode )
    LAN B:
    Wgr614 ===>>> Lan PORT2 to lanPORT 4 == >>> No systems ???
    ( 3 additional desktops possible )
    LAN C:
    WGR614 ===>> LAN1 PORT===>> Dlink switch===>>> 15 desktops. No wifi mode allowed.

    LAN D: Ar800V3 LANport 2 to LAN port 4==== NO systems .

Confirm this is the setup , and total system in in ALL LANS ( total 15 systems.???)
Which employees in which LOOP A,B, C or D above to be monitored ?

    013:

Whether the usage of all the systems , including in wifi mode is to be
    monitored for a month ?

    014:
whether a quota ( bandwidth is to be allotted to each system ?

    015:
Whether ALL SYSTEMS need Internet connectivity ?

016: All computers use own data Base or access a Master Data Base?
    Para three:

    Free quota of 30GB divided by 15 systems/employees .
Each 2 GB or allowed only 80 MB per working day.
No idea about nature of work of the employees.

I Use double the quota for forum use and VOIP traffic ( about 5 GB per month ).!!!
    Feedback.

    yes, BBG Combo 2799 .

    All Windows for employees.
    I use iMac.

    004:ADSL MODEM : Type 2 : Teracom Wifi Modem. Ar800V3??
    Disabled wireless mode ?
    Yes wireless is disabled.

    005:
all Desktops do not have wifi adapters?
Only one desktop is connected via wifi and its using a Dlink Wifi Adapter.

006: Employees allowed to bring laptops/ USB memory sticks ?
    No.

007: In charge of computers : any Computer expert/employee ?
I manage everything myself. I did this whole setup as well.

008: Any sensitive data/info stored in the computers. ?
Yes, client stuff on each of the developer's system.

    009:

All ports of NetgearWGR614V6 wifi disabled here also ?
    Lan1 to Lan4 forming a separate LAN ?
Dint get this question. Wifi Is enabled from Netgear control panel. From the 4LAN, 3 are connected to Mac, Switch, a PC and one is free.

    010:
need for using above , when Ar800V3 has similar lan ports ?
    similar model:

Yes, thats the same modem, I have.

    011:
Employees use cellphones /smartphones with wifi facility ?
    no.

And I dint understand your last reply again

And I dint understand your last reply again
    Para 4:
Simply as a HOBBY , passing time in Internet ( and good for nothing !) ,I use about 4 GB to 5 GB. every month.
I use the same speed which your employees get 512 Kbps speed
8MB divided by say 16. ( not all the time of course ). No games/
No music video /picture download. Use Firefox blocking all advertisements/flash /video /etc.

Rarely I see the Advts in this forum also! ( except when i switch to IE9)
I refer various web sites/blogs/forums / download user manuals etc.
I will again surf/google and try to suggest a suitable solution.

Now the point I was making : the so called usage of 60 to 70GB/per month is not much, for a professional out fit where something is developed. Staff relations will be strained , if some are blocked or given a particular quota. or if their usage is monitored. If the activity is of a Creative/development nature, I feel the usage is not much.

    Para 5:
    (a)
    I think WGR614 has some filtering facility ( even AR800V3) .
I have to study the menu for Netgear Wgr614v9 ( which I have), but in use elsewhere.
    (b) You can install NetworX application ( FREE) in each Machine to monitor the usage. say for a week or 15 days. to ensure there is no misuse.
    (c)
Please wait for better ideas from some other members , later this evening/night.

Wow, 16 systems, then speed is divided ? YUK!!

How can I maintain the consistency among all the systems ? Any idea ?

And is network server a solution ?

Actually, we dont need data transfer , since everything is being developed ar our local server. As I said, for the first few months, it was hardly 2-30GB being used and I used to sell some to my nearly college guys. Ha ha!

    Now, somehow its being outraged.
    No idea. How.

I think, these Microsoft updates are eating it, since all of the systems are genuine windows.

Anyways, let me know about filtering.

See the Screen shot. I think you can monitor usage of mutiple machines with NetworX. whether usage will be shown separately for each system not known/tested.
Say connect 4 at a time for a day. or use 4 Networx applications.
After 4 days the group having max usage is selected.
    Reduce it to 2. etc.
Pinpoint the misuse of the facility.

not enough essential information!in my opinion it is better to eliminate the cause rather than treat symptoms.if employees have access to admin account someone can exit the networx/bandwidth monitoring application for the duration they are downloading something.also you can't ask employees to install monitoring softwares on their personal computer/laptop/phone.you should eliminate the benefits of using 8mbps line to download.you can fully control your modem.set a strong hard to guess password(you should have done it already).disable UPnP as well as any port forwarding/DMZ(unless you run a server on one of these PCs).set an automated script to disconnect your modem broadband link after every 10 minutes.in your modem setting blacklist all major free file sharing hosts like fileserve, filesonic, megaupload etc.

essbebe and whitestar_999 have given many suggestions. My chaar aane are as follows:
    • Let us not start by blaming employees for illegal usage, etc. We will narrow that down later.
    • Start with the "usual suspects" such as viruses/trojans that keep using the bandwidth in the background; eliminate such possibilities.
    • I am assuming that your wireless network is protected by implementation of wireless security.
    • I would recommend adding a proxy server for all internet usage. By using a proxy many sites, etc. can be blocked. For example, a proxy server can block downloads of file types such as zip, exe, rar, etc.
    • Proxy server can also determine bandwidth usage by internal machines (IP addresses).
    • On top of proxy server, there are software solutions such as Websense which can block access even further. Proxy server blocking methods are manual and tedious whereas software such as Websense make job easier. Such software can block sites by domains such as YouTube, etc.
    • Finally, make sure that the network control is with you or a reliable network admin who will block ports for illegal torrenting, etc.
    Hope this helps.
