Default What is an average transfer speed in a Network?

I use Huawei Quidway Wireless modem. Wired to XP desktop , wireless to Win 7 Home Edition notebook. The connection transfer speed of files in between the two is abysmal 2MB(BYTES) per second at maximum and hovers between 1.5 to 2MBps.
Earlier I had connected the Desktop to the Modem by a USB chord. The speed was only 1.0MBps. After having replaced with an ethernet connection it has just improved to what I mentioned.
My question -- Is the speed justifiable. The wireless modem claims a speed (wireless) of 54Mbps aka nearly 6.5MBps in its manual.
Kindly the people /experts who have been/are using such Network reply . I would like to know the guideline and setting parameters.
    PS
The notebook is quiet close to the modem ,I have moved around my Laptop / Modem (the LOCATION jargon) and tried various locations.Always the signal strength is excellent and there seems to be no issue due to the location.

Is that the speed you get with modem to desktop with ethernet cable and laptop on WiFi ?

If yes, disable firewall + antivirus and check. Which ethernet cable are you using ? There are many sub classification in it I think.

What is the plan speed ? Where you downloading anything during the file transfer ?

Connect both machines using ethernet and report the file transfer speed.

    From GOOGLE search:
To fix the dreadfully slow file copy issue FROM a Win7 x64 system TO a WinXP x32 file share/server, etc.

Turn off the Windows 7 Homegroup feature by "leaving" it . This can be located in: Control Panel\Network and Internet\HomeGroup
Make sure you have Network discovery, Public Folder Sharing, File and Printer Sharing, etc. ON in both your network profile here as well : Control Panel\Network and Internet\Network and Sharing Center\Advanced sharing settings
    Logoff when prompted and Reboot

Note: You can still be part of a windows workgroup, but leave the homegroup. Once you do that your file copy issues should be solved......

My modem has 1 slot for usb and 1 for ethernet (which is already connected to my desktop). Can two computers be linked by ethernet. Kindly brief

In fact I got to some other link which states that none of this helps and there are some other features like
    "ARP Offload - Enable
    Ethernet@WireSpeed -Enable
    Flow Control - Auto
    Interrupt Modulation - Enable
IPv4 Checksum Offload - Rx & Tx Enabled
Large Send Offload (IPv4) - Enable
    Large Send Offload v2 (IPv4) - Disable
    Large Send Offload v2 (IPv6) - Disable
Network Address - Not present (radio button)
    NS Offload - Enable
Priority & VLAN - Priority & VLAN Enabled
    Receive Side Scaling - Enable
RSS Queues - RSS 4 Queues
    Speed & Duplex - Auto
TCP & UDP Checksum Offload (IPv4) - Rx & Tx Enabled
TCP & UDP Checksum Offload (IPv6) - Rx & Tx Enabled
    VLAN ID - 0
    Wake Up Capabilities - Both
WOL Speed - Lowest Speed Advertised"

But the problem is I am not able to get to the above settings from my Network adapter. Is that limited for Home edition.

Another question regarding WLAN connection settings. By default I had the box unchecked and now I have checked that. What is the advantage?? Image attached.

device manager->network adapter->realtek(or whatever)->advanced tab.these settings only depend on the driver installed for network adapter & not on OS.

try to get a xp laptop & then test speeds.if no change then issue is with router.if speeds improve considerably then issue with router.

Use crossover cat 5 cable to connect only 2 computer's Ethernet port to Ethernet port. This is only for file transferring.

use switch ( 4 port or 8 port ) with straight through cable for using internet with file transferring.

You can use both modem and LAN in ethernet mode. In your case, get a new PCI ethernet card (costs around Rs. 300). Even with old systems, you get minimum 1 Mbps transfer speed if configured correctly. It can go up according to the capacity of LAN card and maximum HDD speeds.

Very valid suggestion regarding direct connection with a crossover cable. On testing I got nearly 11.5MB/s (on peak) and varied between 11.0MB/s to 4.5MB/s (Might be due to many number of files rather than a single big file).

So now what do I look for or adjust in my broadband router where I get such low speeds.Should I email Quidway support?

A small 4- or 8-port switch is an economical way of connecting multiple wired machines to a single-ethernet-port modem. Just connect the modem to one port, and the other ports to your machines.

Network in a box! No additional configuration needed. Will provide file-sharing and other networking facilities between your laptop/desktop without even having the modem turned on.
