    Unhappy Bsnl 750ul plan speed

hi everyone...im from chennai(tn)....i use the 750UL plan of bsnl which provides 512Kbps....i usually browse and download a lot..approx i use 15GB-20GB permonth both down and up.....and while i use torrents with good seeds i get a max speed of 55kB/s and not more than that and 58kB/s in case of fileserver oo rapidshare...

i read some of threads in this forum. Everyone having this plan states that they get a speed of 60-70kB/s constantly.

my question is why dont i get 60-70kB/s even on a good torrent?

whenever you download something ~6% is overhead meaning if your connection max download speed is 64KBps you will get max actual dl speed 94% of 64=60KBps.overhead is more in case of torrents.to give you an idea my download manager show avg download speed ~205KBps while my bandwidth monitoring software reports speed ~220KBps.the difference is due to overhead.only way you can get 64KBps on a 512kbps line is if your total download speed cap is set at a value higher than 512kbps at local exchange.there are some example of this where people after running 4mbps plan with FUP changed back to 2mbps limited with night free plan & started getting ~240KBps since the limit at local exchange remained at 4mbps.

Is he both able and willing? Then whence cometh evil? Is he neither able nor willing? Then why call him God?

my question is why dont i get 60-70kB/s even on a good torrent?

The question is how you define a good torrent. If you are just into seeds, peers too matters. Which torrent client do you use ? Latest version of utorrent shows the health of torrent too.

Speed can be affected by tracker, health of torrent, torrent client used and a lot of other factors. You can try some private trackers where there are insanely high no. of seeds than peers.

As for direct links, source does matter. Try a download from Microsoft and report your speed. If you ask me, not everyone is lucky enough to get 60 - 70 KBps as the line condition may not be good enough. I live at a stone throw distance from exchange and line is brand new with almost no joints.

As I mentioned before, speedtest.net gives only an idea and the actual results can vary.
