Disconnect the USB cable from computer.
Connect Rj45 from modem to computer ethernet port.
Try 192.168.1.1 or see (2) below.

    2. In computer Network LAN Properties
    New window;
    select tcp/ip properties
    Enter 192.168.1.10
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.1
    apply Save.
On top check the ethernet card box "configure" enabled ??
    mention card details.
    Feedback.

Even if you are not able to open the modem settings using 192.168.1.1, you should be able to connect using ethernet.

    To do

    1. Try using another modem.

    2. Change ethernet cable and check.

    3. Network and sharing center, on the left hand side, you will find an option to change network adapter settings. Use these values and check.

    select tcp/ip properties

    Enter 192.168.1.10
    255.255.255.0
    192.168.1.1
    apply Save.

    Try and update here.

My windows knowledge ends with XP, so I'll leave that to the others, and talk in principle only.

There is no rule that says your modem has to be 192.168.1.1. Just... most of them come from the factory that way (a few, though, use 192.168.0.1!) and the "default" suits most of just fine, without even thinking about it.

The simplest thing for your TCP/IP configuration to say (probably not very different in Vista to XP?) is Obtain a network address automatically.

From your ipconfig output, I'm guessing that that is what is happening.

Your PC, when it boots, looks for a "DHCP Server." The one it finds will usually be your modem. It requests all the information to fill in the blank spaces on the TCP/IP config. Obtain a network address automatically, in technical terms, means Use DHCP.

That appears to be happening, with the modem (DHCP Server) saying,"You are 192.168.1.4. You can access the net through 192.168.1.2 (that's me)"

If your modem really is 192.168.1.2, that's fine ... but something's wrong, and it isn't fine.

Open a command window. Try the following commands:

    C:\ > ping 192.168.1.1

    ... ... ...

    C:\ > ping 192.168.1.2
You should get responses to one or the other indicating that that address exists and is replying. That should be your modem.

    Errr... while you there, try

    C:\> ping 192.168.1.4
Yes, you are pinging yourself, and if you don't get a reply, your network setup, or even possibly your network "card" (hardware on the motherboard) is screwed.

If you get a reply back from 192.168.1.2... follow essbebe's instructions, but substitute the 2 instead of the 1 for the default gateway.

Ultimately, if your modem's LAN configuration is screwed, and you can't guess your way in, you need to hit the reset button. Do not do this if you do not have the FULL instructions to configure the modem for BSNL's network.

Hope this helps rather than confuses <Blush>

Yep, me too suspected ethernet card issue. That is why I suggested it. If it happened after OS reinstall, try updating / reinstalling the ethernet card driver.

... very good point. Although recent Windows versions should not be short of the drivers, with a recent re-install of XP on an old machine would not do any networking until the drivers were obtained and installed

but... note his ipconfig output above: the adapter seems alive and well, with DHCP functioning.

Internetuser... I try to take stuff step by step and keep it simple, but sometimes I end up making it sound more complicated! Please try the Ping commands I suggested: the output, or lack of it, will be useful to everyone on the thread.

    @nick:
    (1) presently usb interface is there.

    ping 192.168.1.2
    ping 192.168.1.3

    works well.

    (2) one more problem I found-
whenever link from bsnl goes I cant open either 192.168.1.1(with LAN interface) and 192.168.1.2 (usb).
this ads to the problem. modem specific problem. Dlink glb 802 c.
no link u cant open modem setting.

    (3) I shall try again eathernet interface when connection is stable.

with usb interface: 192.168.1.4 did not work

    1. Ping as a trouble-shooting tool: take it in steps. First, ping your own-machine net interface; second, ping another (if there is one) machine on the net; third, ping the router LAN address; fourth, ping something outside the LAN. It is very useful.

As a sideline, it also tells you if DNS is working. If you ping www<dot>known-site<dot>com, and the next line does not show the resolved IP address, your DNS is not configured correctly or not working.

    2. Link goes down and you can't access the router.... Suggests a problem with the router. Last time I had this, it took me (and the Airtel engineer) some time to realise that the router was not dropping the link, but rebooting!. It's a possibility. Just a theory.

    3. When you're using the USB connection, you are using a different network interface, and it is probably given a different IP address by the router, so that makes sense.

Try reinstallling drivers. It works in some cases. Go to device manager and use the option to update or reinstall.

Also do try another modem and check. It can be that your ethernet port on modem is faulty.
