Default Sudden speed drop in BSNL BB Plan 750

    Hi all,

I have been using BSNL UL750 plan for the past 4 years with a speed of around 512 kbps. All of a sudden, from August 2011, I was getting very good download speeds of 180kB/s! I was able to download a 700Mb movie under 1 and half hours! All of a sudden for the last month, it has dropped down to 60kB/s again.. the local BSNL exchange says the speed has always been at 512 kbps!! Has anyone else encountered this? By the way I am from Chennai. Looking forward to your feedback folks! Thanks

Me too on UL 750. Never got anything above 70 KBps (at max). But I have seen some members reporting of higher speed which ended abruptly. This may be due to some settings error at exchange (mainly mistake in setting port speed), which gets rectified when there is an audit or some sort of reset (knowingly or unknowingly). This is a lucky mistake due to BSNL error and only thing you can do is hope for that to happen again.

Thanks for the answer Dilip! *sigh* it was lovely! Those 3 months of terrific speed! Wish it could happen again!

True, once we got a wind of that speed, it is very hard to live with 512 Kbps. If your usage is not much high, you can try option FUPed UL plans which gives around 4 Mbps till 8 GB or something and 256 Kbps afterwards.

That's exactly where the problem is! LOL.. I used up almost 50 GB or so every month for the last three months! I filled up my 500 GB external hard disk to full capacity!

    Default Could it be this?

About a month back the government announced that it was thinking about making roaming charges nil and to increase the speed of broadband. BSNL has silently brought back the speed to 60kBps from the unofficial 200kBps so as to show the increase in speed! Would you guys agree on this?

No. You need to understand that these organizations often employ people who do not deserve to be there on the first place. It is true in both the government and private sectors.

Your plan's default speed was 512kbps. Or 64kBps. BSNL officials assign the speed profile (i.e. the default speed associated with the port) manually. In other words, someone did the careless mistake of entering wrong information in your speed profile. As a subscriber, you welcomed this move and began to enjoy high speed internet for a fraction of the cost.

Now, they have revamped their systems. They started looking more closely into the speed profiles of their subscribers. And hence, the wrongly speed profiles were corrected. As a direct result of the same, you began to experience the original speeds that is associated with your plan!

Regarding the government announcements...they will remain on paper. There are plenty of forces that oppose such proposals within this country. They do this because incorporating such advanced measures means a drastic reduction in their average revenue per customer.

Cool Techie is correct. The plan always had 512 Kbps (64 Kbps), it was some mistake that a handful got a different speed. The changes you are mentioning are draft policy which is not even finalized as policy and many changes will not happen for at least 3 years unless there is some real miracle.
