Default Q:utorrent settings for BSNL home 500 night unlimited

BSNL Home 500 - night unlimited 2am-8am and ~1.5-2mbps speed

max upload rate - 20 kBps

max download rate - 195 kBps

    global max # of connections - 150
max # of connected peers per torrent - 150

I find that increasing upload rate too much (30/35+) tends to choke my connection.

Similarly too many #connections (500+) also chokes.

Anyone else have any suggested values ?

The dl/ul speeds seem pretty obvious but i'm particularly interested in the "number of connections" settings that are ideal and won't choke my connection.

May I know what do you mean by choking ? I get around 60 KBps upload speed and same download. I have set maximum active torrents as two and maximum active downloads as one. Connections per torrent is set as 70 (for UL 750) and works quite fine for me. Don't think reducing upload speed too much will have any effect on torrent download.

    You can try

Options > Setup guide to allow utorrent set the values automatically.

Another option is to try utorrent official forum.

your observation is correct.25-30KBps global upload limit is most suitable for a connection with upload speed ~500kbps & this much no. of connections per torrent.in fact if you download a torrent with 100 connected peers at ~195KBps then you are also using ~20KBps upload overhead because of ack packets.this is the reason why if you install a bandwidth monitoring software like networx it will report upload at ~40-50KBps when in torrent you have set upload global limit as 25-30KBps.the difference is due to overhead.

I face the same issue but download goes 220+ if there are good no.of seeds. Upload is very bad hardly gets 20.

choking is just a very vague term to describe what happens when you reach upload or download bandwidth caps or possibly some kind of cap bsnl places on the number of connected IP addresses.

Some ISPs, like airtel are known to "choke" connections with high torrent traffic or even streaming media content with bandwidth shaping.

If you have a huge upload (30kbps+) or huge download (250kbps+), or a very high number of connected peers:

    1) Latencies to everything will fluctuate
    2) There can be packet loss
    3) Pages won't open/other downloads will get stuck
You'll basically see what looks like network congestion.

Allow 70% of your upload speed to utorrent and keep maximum number of active torrent 1 or 2 more than active number of downloads. You would still get 220+ with the 30% spared upload.
Also make sure you dont have a very high number for number of connections, it takes a lot of bandwidth as overhead. For 2mbps connections even 50 connections per torrent will give you 220+ even in public trackers. 60-70 should be enough. I keep 50 per torrent and 3 active torrents in total (1 download, 2 upload or viceversa depending on speed). Even 700MB of seed a night will be a lot of help for someone with 256 or 512 kbps speed.
