Default Do i need modem as well as Router ?

    Hi IBF user's,
I am about to get a new broadband connection from BSNL very soon. I don't know more deep about networking so i choose to ask some users who do it themselves.

    OK! here is point...
do i really need a router if i own a modem just for one computer connection ?
Picture tells more than words. Screenshot's are appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!!

Though called a modem, it is modem plus router what we gets. It will be either WiFi enabled or non WiFi. If you already have a non WiFi modem, you can simply buy a WiFi router and use it with modem.

I think you are referring to the inbuilt modem which used to come in dial up days. You will need an ADSL modem to use BSNL broadband.

What screen shots are you expecting ?

For one computer i would suggest go with any ADSL modem, you would save some bucks on this, and if money doesnt bothers you much go with ADSL+WiFi modem for future proofing (in case you have a laptop and want to browse wirelessly)..

You can google images for ADSL modems or WiFi ADSL modems ....

NOTE: Dont misunderstood modems for ADSL modems, both are two different entities

We are familiar to call a ADSL CPE as a MODEM. technically it is not a MODEM because it does not do modulator-demodulator or technically does not modulates an analog carrier signal to encode digital information, and also not demodulates such a carrier signal to decode the transmitted information. ADSL CPE is a equipment that helps to connect to the B-RAS server for the authentication and data flow ( broadband ) from the DSLAM through copper pair and those process are happen with the digitally communication, The filter we use at the line to separate the analog signal for the telecommunication ( Voice call ). This filter not require on those copper pair where the Voice call does not taking in place. Actually the modem we call it's a CPE ( Customer-premises equipment or customer-provided equipment ) or other known name is residential gateways (RG). This CPE works in a Digital Subscriber Line technology that's why it's call ADSL (Asymmetric digital subscriber line ). Technically this CPE it's not a MODEM but this CPE has won operation system where router program is install. So we can call it ADSL Router.

The thread starter ask " Do i need modem as well as Router ? " actually you do not need a modem and a router. You need a ADSL Router or ADSL CPE.

You do not need to headache on it, if you don't want the BSNL CPE and planning to purchase from the market then just say to seller I need an ADSL Router.

see this thread for details about different modems.
http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-b...uter-bsnl.html (Do i need a modem + router from BSNL?)

Usually, BSNL will give you the modem/router with settings to connect to Internet.( or a staff member will test the connection in your location, with their laptop if needed( Installation charges Rs 250/=may be charged . )

There is life outside your dorm room as well... people are busy and if someone takes the time to help you out I would expect better behavior.
