Default Even after disconnecting, ACT light keeps blinking

The modem is Huaweri MT 882. There are five lights: the power light which is always on, the link light which shows when the modem has connected, the ACT light which blinks when there is data transfer, the Lan light which is how I connect to the modem and which is always on but orange colour, and the USB light which also blinks during data transfer even though I have not connected through USB.

I've been facing an unstable connection since yesterday, where the connection drops every two minutes. Today I'd connected but there was no data transfer so I thought that I'd disconnect and reconnect, but even after I disconnected, I found that the ACT and USB lights were still blinking. The USB light stopped blinking after a few seconds but the ACT light continued as if I was still using the net.

Can this happen because of malware? Is it possible for data transfer to continue after I've manually disconnected from within Windows?

How many ports does your modem have ? You use both USB and ethernet at the same time ? How many devices do you connect ? Which OS ? Do they show connected in network connections ?

Try using a different modem and check

    This may help

I don't use USB and Ethernet at the same time, I don't use USB at all. I've only connected through Ethernet, but when there is data transfer, both Ethernet and USB lights blink together. I don't know about ports, but I think the answer is two (USB and Ethernet, there are no other holes where I can fit wires). Only my computer is connected to the modem.

The OS is XP SP3, and its got the default dialer where you enter username and password and if you click the icon again after connecting, it allows you to disconnect.

How am I going to get another modem?

I'll look at that page, but the problem is not about frequent disconnects.

What happened is that I disconnected from within Windows, and then noticed that the ACT and USB lights were still blinking. I clicked on the Internet connection icon again and it showed me the dialog box for connecting, meaning the connection had not been dialed and the computer was disconnected from the Internet. I checked the firewall and it showed no programs were using the connection, and still the lights were blinking. So is it possible for malware to transfer data even when the connection has not been dialed from within Windows and doesn't show up in the firewall as well?

The LEDs present on the modem denote the respective activities to which it is associated. At times, even with the modem disconnected, the LEDs may blink. Unless you are seeing an exponential increase in your broadband usage i.e. when the modem is disconnected from the internet, you need not have to worry about it.

The modem is one from the oldest series of modems handed out by BSNL. This modem is known to act in wierd manners, with the passage of time. A common problem faced by certain subscribers is disconnectivity when the modem heats up a lot. Another typical problem faced by certain set of subscribers who use the same modem is the lack of connectivity to the internet (inspite of everything being connected as required). I mean, out of the blue, this modem may stop working and the user had to restart the modem to make it work like it used to.

It is of little wonder that BSNL stopped issuing huawei modems soon after the initial two - three years.

Try the suggestions in that link.

Hope you will have some friends who won't mind lending their modem for some 30 minutes.

Do they show connected in network connections?
Need status of connection (connected, not plugged in, limited or no connectivity) etc which you can find in network connections.
