Default Connecting a Desktop and Laptop through Teracom Type-1 Modem

I have taken a BSNL Broadband plan 750 UL on my desktop and now I want to the same to be used for my Laptop as well. The modem Teracom Type-1 has got 4 Lanports. I connected a Lan cable to one of the ports of this modem and connected the other end to my laptop but still I cannot access the internet connection.

Is there any additional settings that I have to make on my Laptop. My Laptop is a Dell Inspiron 15R which runs on Windows 7. Do I have to install the Modem driver or something.

Your help will be greatly appreciated.

    Regards.

Presume desktop gets connected to Internet when connected from LAN1
Remove the same cable and try for only laptop.
In laptop you have to create a LAN connection.
(Control Panel Network and sharing center)
LAN icon ( near Loudspeaker Icon) should appear in task bar.

You should be connected in PPPoE mode "AlwayOn"
( USERID/PW stored entered in wan page of modem )
    Enable DHCP in the modem.

It says WiFi, but you can use either WiFi or LAN cable whichever you prefer (or available). Presume you are not in dialer mode.

Before I could connect my Desktop and Laptop as suggested by you, my Desktop got corrupted and now Windows XP will have to be installed again and am afraid that all the modem settings will have to be done again. I do not know in how much time will the technical guy from BSNL will reach my place. Can I do it myself - Do I have to install the Modem driver again after installation of Windows XP and if so where will the driver be available.
Could you also please mention what are all the inputs I have to feed in, if any like the Server Address etc. (are all the Servers of BSNL have the same address)?

Modem settings are not affected by operating system. Only thing that you require after a format will be installing USB drivers if you are using USB port and creating a dialer if you are in bridge mode. If in PPPoE, it is plug and play literally. If you are facing any issue, post here.

    Dear essbee and Dilip,

Thanks for the great help. After installation of Windows XP and as instructed by you people I have made the settings successfully and it is working fine. Now I can access internet on both the Desktop and Laptop at the same time.

I now want to make a connection in the Bridge Mode as well. I suppose for this I will have to install the PPPoE.exe file from BSNL Calcutta. But how do I make a shortcut for this connection on my Desktop (is it automatically generated). Moreover, I wish to purchase a Wi-fi router for accessing internet on my laptop as I believe that plugging in the Ethernet wire every time may damage my laptop. Hope the Wi-Fi signal can penetrate between a floor.

    Congrats

Bridge mode not possible if you want to use more than one system at the same time unless you use one as proxy server. In that case, the server should be ON even if you do not have any use for it. Any special purpose for favouring it ?

Using cable won't harm your system in any way but WiFi will certain be comfortable as it is wire free.

I am okay with the Bridge mode and only want to use it on my Dekstop. The procedures I mentioned above is that okay in this case. Intend to buy a Netgear 150 router for this purpose, Does this router work smoothly for Skype as well?

    It will be like

BSNL line > Modem > Desktop / laptop (ICS enabled) > Laptop / Desktop

You will not be able to use red if blue one is not working.

    Dear Esbebe and Dilip,

Here is what I want, excuse me for not being so technically sound.

I only want the Bridge Mode exclusively for my Desktop (laptop is switched off at this time / there is no use of laptop) and for doing this I suppose here are the steps to be followed:

    1. Install a PPPoE.exe file (a LAN Card driver) that can be downloaded from BSNL Calcutta.

    2. Follow the procedures as explained by Esbebe i.e. Configuring a PPPoE Dialer in the link provided by him.

    Is this the right method.

Sorry, you cannot use different modes on two machines connecting to same modem. May I know what is troubling you with current setup ? If you want dialer and wish to use more than one machine at the same time, the only way out is as given in my previous post (to my knowledge).

    No
I only want to use this Bridge mode for a single machine i.e. my Desktop and for this is the procedures that I mentioned correct or not. I do not want to use both the systems simultaneously.

If you don't want to use both at the same time , switch off the desktop or laptop !
Use Dialer mode in Desktop and in laptop.
    Modem ON.

    BSNL Jn==>> ADSL filter==ModemPort ==Rj11 to Modem .
    Modem LAN1 to desktop (RJ45 cable )
    Modem Lan 2 to Laptop(Rj45 cable )
    USB port not used.

no need to download any such file unless you are running windows 95/98.also just a personal opinion but never download any exe file from any bsnl site.they have a virus pppoe.exe file link in rajasthan bsnl site for months now & even after repeated complaints haven't done anything yet.

No matter you use one system at a time or not, you cannot have 2 modes set for the modem. If you use dialer on desktop, same applies to laptop unless you change mode manually each time you switch the systems.

Were you able to use internet using this setup ? Mention the modes set for Asus and Teracom (PPPoE /Bridge).

The setup used for Teracom and the router is PPPoE. I am using a BSNL Broadband connection 750 unlimited. The router has not been able to identify the network using a WPS switch behind it and I had to connect one LAN Wire from the router to my Laptop so that the router could identify all the settings inside the laptop and after doing this I have been able to access the internet through wifi. Does connecting a LAN Wire from the Modem to the Router will solve this issue?

Change router to bridge mode and other settings as per guide below

The setup should be like this

BSNL line > modem > line from LAN port of modem to router

    Dear Dilip, Esbebe
I have been able to connect the Modem to the Router successfully and it is working fine. I find that wired connection is more faster as compared to a wireless connection.

Check speed here in LAN mode and wifi mode.
My Broadband Speed - Broadband Speed Tester
Mention the speed of your tariff plan.

Data transfer at 100Mbps ( Lan ethernet cards) and usually 54Mbps (old wifi cards) will not make much difference.
    wait....... time in GDMT
    ethernet connection 2 Mbps

    wifi mode:
