    Default Need to choose WiFi Modem/Router for my new BSNL BB connection

    Hi guys

    Can anyone pls suggest me in choosing a right Wifi Modem for my new BB connection?

    The BSNL guy suggested me buy from him the Teracom Type-WT ADSL-2 + CPE/IAD WiFi-TA model. It costs INR 2250. If I'm not wrong this is the 3-in-1 type which can be directly plugged to my BSNL phone? Is it correct?

    Is it good enough? I'm planning to use it for my HP Laptop and Ipad2. I'm ready to strech my budget to around 3k.

    Pls suggest if anyone have a better suggestions? I'm not familiar with configuring the Modems/Routers. So easy to use should be a criteria.

    Thanks
    Shiva

    I'm not familiar with configuring the Modems/Routers.
    It costs INR 2250.
    almost same price in outside market for similar models.
    http://*******************/index.php?topic=4978.0

    For use in wifi mode ( radius of activity exceeding say approx 30 feet also in Groundfloor or to 2nd floor etc a better model suggested. )

    2.
    So easy to use should be a criteria.
    Better buy or rent from BSNL the modem/router suggested.
    3.
    (a)
    \It should be configured, so that as soon as you switch on system/ modem
    you get connected to Internet.
    (b)
    ( ask the engineer to Enable DHCP in the modem router )
    (c)
    Request him to SAVE the settings to a file in your Harddisk.
    say C:/My Documents/Bsnl router ok
    4.
    After getting the connection established and ,can use the ipad2 also in
    Wifi mode, post details here.
    mention model number & OS used.
    5.
    I will try to confuse/guide you as much as possible ! ( only a Joke !!!)
    Other members also will guide you. Some videos available in YouTube
    for setting up some models.

    Rs. 2,250 for Teracom modem seems a bit high to me. You can check ebay where Teracom is available for sale independently.

    Doubtful, the salesman in a computer shop will, open the package, set it up
    . for him.
    User may have to depend on a software Engineer. ( visit charges Rs 600/= min !)

    It was sold for Rs. 1,600 before so Rs. 2,250 seem to a bit high. Ya, you are right, they take advantage of people who are not familiar with these things.

    @Essbebe

    Thanks for your suggestion. I'll go with the Teracom modem then. The guy told he'll deliver the fully configured Modem and set it up for me. I'll get the Landline connection tomorrow and internet connection on Wednesday most probably. I'll get back with all the information afterwards.

    @Meetdilip

    Thanks for your reply. Searched e-bay but couldn't find anything for lesser. But if the above said model is good and performs well, I dont have much pain in giving 200-300 more as it is a one time payment.

    The modem/router supplied by BSNL if purchased outright, will be exchanged only for one year. Try to get it on Rental basis of Rs 80/PM. The Security deposit (refundable if unit in working condition )is recovered in 3 instalments.

    While I am not happy with your selection, could not help it because of your
    requirements.
    The person who is assisting you may not be exactly a BSNL employee, probably a franchisee. CONFIRM.
    Make all payments by Cheque. No cash.
    ( Usually only a token advance Of Rs 500/= or Rs 1000/= is required) Modem purchase separate.

    @meetdilip: suggest a model from letsbuy.Dlink DSL2730U ? Any New year discounts seen ?
    two units (1)adsl modem + (2)wifi router seperately can be considered.

    There are some discount coupons. 5 % on any purchase. There is another one which gives Rs. 500 on any purchase over Rs. 1,000. I think you will be a better judge of modems than me

    U r right..the guy is not a direct BSNL employee. I just paid INR 500 as the reg fee. I'm still bet for buying modem from outside. But I need suggestion from you guys for the same.

    I was going through Letsbuy/flipkart/e-bay. Found many ADSL2+Modem. But not sure which one to choose. There is DSL2750U ADSL2+ Router with USB for INR 2730. Is it a good buy? or any other suggestions? I would prefer a single unit instead of going for a separate Modem/Router. Is it ok? Should I go for D-link or may be Cisco or Netgear?

    Also some more basic Qs(may sound stupid to you all). Do I need to purchase anything else apart from my BSNL telephone line if I opt for DSL2750U or DSL2730U or any of similar kind? Does this need a PC connection always? I mean will it work only with my ipad2?

    Do I need to purchase anything else apart from my BSNL telephone line if

    Yes . one or two Rj11 telephone cable/connectors short say 2 meters or
    3 meters cost about Rs 5 /meter. (additional Rj45 cable .if needed )

    ADSL splitter cost Rs 75 to Rs 100/= Model SP 204A
    ox
    ( I have one in the box :also two rj11 cables and a two way phone splitter
    Do not remember from which box I got them )

    [ I opt for DSL2750U or DSL2730U or any of similar kind?

    Both same except DSL2730U will do for your needs.
    DSl2750U addl USB storage for downloads etc : higher cost . )

    Does this need a PC connection always? I mean will it work only with my ipad2?

    For setting up/testing : laptop needed ( with or without wifi card)
    Ipad2 will work directly with wifi router.

    DSL2520U Adsl modem package contains
    ( Most models will have identical contents model No. will change!)
    DSL2520U adsl2/2Moderm router
    Easy Install CD Manual and drivers
    Quick Install Guide with warranty Documents
    Power Adapter
    Ethernet cable Cat5 ( Rj45)
    USB1.1 cable

    @essbebe

    Thanks for the reply...it is more or less clear to me now...I think now I have to decide whether I want to play it safe by opting for BSNL router or to try better models from outside and configure it by myself.

    Do you think will it be a headache for a person to configure the router without much knowledge about it? Also you said you are not happy with Teracom modem...is it the coverage or the service or the durability which you dont like....

    Configuring router can be done without much hassle by someone with average computer knowledge.

    Thanks for all your comments...I think this time I'll go with the BSNL router (Teracom). I'll update here again once it is installed and I start to use my BB.

    Hi

    Finally I got my landline+BB connection immediately followed by my Wifi Router(Teracom T2 ADSL Router with USB port) from BSNL dealer. Before coming he got it configured and came. So at my home he just plugged it into the telephone line and it started working. I've opted for 750 Combo UL( 512 kbps) initially and plan to change it to 900 Combo UL later. I've not installed any config SW in my PC.

    I did a speedtest and attaching the result here. Got download speed of around 575 kbps.

    Now do I need to install any SW for this as suggested here earlier?

    No, BSNL settings are very stable in normal case. Do not use any software to troubleshoot the connection. The one from BSNL actually corrupts it.

    Need to take any backup of the configuration?

    Yes, taking back up helps a lot when something goes wrong in settings.

    @moske
    I paid 2250 (all inclusive) for my modem. So far its all going very smooth. I'm staying in 1200 sqft area house and kept the modem in a corner. I'm gettin fairly good signal even in the front road. I'm using wifi in my Laptop, ipad2 and in my LG optimus Black too without any trouble. I guess there shoud not be any problem connecting it desktop PC too if it is wifi enabled.

    But you may not need this as you are already using BB. If you give the details of the modem you are using, experts here may guide you about the correct wifi router.

    Asus DSL N10 Modem is the best Wi Fi modem. Easy to setup and with 5dbi Antenna you can access your modem in 100 Meeter of radius. And it cost from Rs. 2500. I am using this modem since last 6 months on BSNL BB with UL499 plan. It works flawlessly with Not only BSNL but all other ADSL service Providers. It has preinstalled all the ADSL service provider's settings. Just connect the telephone line. Modem recognize the setting and company and assign automatically settings to the device. You have to enter UN and PW only.
