Default BSNL broadband - is my problem unique?

    Hi,

I am a BSNL broadband customer in ahmedabad since last 2 years. Not much problem and reasonable speed.

But since September 2011, I am facing hell lot of problems. I have UT300R2U modem.

The problem is DSL link light is stable but the data light goes off and then the connection does not work and does not restore itself. I must have made at least 50-60 calls to the call centre since September and I have also written 2-3 times to the nodal officer. Till now this complaint is not resolved 100%.

Every time I complain they "fix up" something and it works. But within 24 hours I face the same problem again.

Once the technician told me to log in to 192.168.1.1 and reboot the modem and it will work. This technique worked for some time. Now even that has no effect.

    Some technicians say:
    • There is cross connection with another line (Line man says there is no cross connection)
    • Your connection is older one based on P2 system and now the new connection is P3 system - that's why this is happening

Whatever be the reason, I don't know but this problem is bugging me to no end.

What to do? Can anybody here help me? Have you faced similar problems?

Inspect the line, make sure there are no joints or non insulated parts. If you see any ask the line man to give a new line.

Try using another modem and check. You can either ask the line man or someone at exchange to come with a spare working modem and see if it is working.

    Try this guide

did you checked for carbon on line joints. If not check it at Distribution box from where your line is coming and at the box in which wire from distribution box goes.

Hi, here's my data from admin

    SNR Margin (dB): 13.4 6.5
    Attenuation (dB): 27.5 10.8
    Output Power (dBm): 12.8 23.3

Does that help to analyze the problem?

Thanks ppl. I have asked lineman to check the line. He has checked the joints and cleaned up the rust, dirt, etc... Don't know how long this solution will last. Will check and update you.

@maxsteel I am technically challenged... but anyway I'll ask lineman's help for checking carbon on the joints from distribution box.

No idea.Trying to compare settings with a similar modem which I have.
    1.
From the Data obtained from Device INFO/Statistics/ADSL menu
it appears the mod mode selected is ADSL2 +.
    2.
IF so go to menu item DSL un check button ADSL2+
    and Enable bitswap. SRA disabled.
SAVE REBOOT wait for 2 minutes.
    3.
Recheck ADSL data and confirm Mod mode shows ADSL2 or GDMT.
The attainable rate should have reduced. ( d/l u/l )
    For GDMT:
    SNR Margin (dB): 33.0 27.0
    Attenuation (dB): 12.0 9.0
    Output Power (dBm): 8.3 17.3
    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 12384 1308
    Rate (Kbps): 2048 512
    4.
Confirm your tariff plan and max speed and any improvement in connection stability.

    Feedback.

Did you get it resolved? How'd you do it?

Line man says no problem in the line but I am still facing the same problem. Technicians had come the other day and they asked me to upgrade to the newer 625.00 unlimited plan.

They say wiring will change and everything will be okay. Is that true?

Will I need another modem to upgrade to "P3 system" (625.00 UL plan??)

I implemented what you said. Here are my stats after that:

    Mode: G.DMT
    Type: Interleave
    Line Coding: Trellis On
    Status: No Defect
    Link Power State: L0

    Downstream Upstream
    SNR Margin (dB): 5.3 7.0
    Attenuation (dB): 25.0 7.5
    Output Power (dBm): 12.5 19.8
    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 8352 1120
    Rate (Kbps): 7616 1024

    Is that better?

SNR margin has reduced (bad) while attenuation has increased (bad). So switching to G.DMT has not really helped.

But if you are getting stable connection, continue to be with G.DMT.

    @netbiztipsUT300R2U
what is your Tariff plan speed ? 4 Mbps plan ? confirm U/L 625. 256Kbps
this is unusual: Compare my readings for ADSL2+ and GDMT)
    GDMT
    Downstream Upstream
SNR Margin (dB): 5.3 7.0 ( such low SNR also unusual compared to adsl2+ 13.4 d/l)
    Attenuation (dB): 25.0 7.5 ( *a small change expected OK. )
    Output Power (dBm): 12.5 19.8
    Attainable Rate (Kbps): 8352 1120 ( seems OK )

Rate (Kbps): 7616 1024 still unusual
Seems you have BSNL line trouble, .
You can try Dialer Mode , if on PPPoE mode ( ID/PW stored in Modem) or visa versa.
Since 2 years , working normal, do not suspect telephone connections.
Remote possibility ADSL Filter has developed fault or high resistance contacts.

Get the modem tested at Exchange. ( get replacement if on rental basis.
Even if it was purchased outright, BSNL staff if they feel like, they can replace the modem, just to avoid your frequent complaints!!!!

My plan is Home UL600, I guess the speed should be 256kbps as per plan.
I am on the PPPoE mode since long but problem started only in September.

Also, I noticed that after I posted my stats in this forum the mode has changed again to ADSL+ on its own... can't understand it. However, since I have done that, connection is relatively stable (although there are a few disruptions and it takes long time to connect)

What is drop wire and where did you get those logs?

    Step by step feedback:

    1. SNR and Line Attenuation values before and after changing to GDMT mode posted in this thread. (Seems like SNR values are worse but since past 2 days connection is relatively stable though not fully okay)

    2. All connections are after splitter. There is a return line from ADSL splitter that goes to the landline connections.

    3. Not checked

    4. Not checked (Sometime back the technician had checked with another modem - no change in problem)

    5. No power reset

    6. I have changed to GDMT mode now. Values are posted in this thread. Connection seems to be more stable though with a few disruptions and long time required to connect.
