Thread: BSNL Wifi modem suggestions

Need to buy/rent a Wifi modem for existing wired BSNL Broadband connection for 2-3 months period. Please help with suggestions.

Current Setup:
- Desktop PC,
- ZTE ZXDSL 831AII modem(without wifi) purchased from BSNL in 2008.
Using via USB mode on PPPoE Protocol. Placed in First floor Corner room.

Temporary planned setup:
- Desktop PC,(no wifi)
- Laptop and Smartphone(both are wifi enabled).

1. Will buying wifi modem from BSNL would be better option or renting it? And why?

2. Are there any BSNL users here from Gujarat? If yes, any idea which wifi modem BSNL is giving to users?

3. Do I just need a wifi modem or both modem + router?

I've read that post already, and it doesn't relate to my situation i.e. temporary requirement of Wifi modem. Also, it doesn't answer any of 3 questions raised above. So, started a new thread.

Would appreciate, If any of the experts here answer these specific questions with their experience.

I'm planning to make a plan + modem change from next month, will appreciate if moderators here can be of some help.

BSNL no longer supplies modem.

2. Are there any BSNL users here from Gujarat? If yes, any idea which wifi modem BSNL is giving to users?

Check in your locality, see if you can get a second hand one.

3. Do I just need a wifi modem or both modem + router?

You can either use a WiFi router only with your current modem or replace the whole with WiFi modem + router.

In that case, will these Wireless N routers work here in India with ZTE ZXDSL 831AII modem?

Normally they do. I am not a good judge of different models, please wait for further suggestions.

For your requirement any wifi router will do. ( for two/three months )
If available on rental basis from BSNL opt for 3-in 1 model Rs 80/P.M rent
Security deposit Rs 1000/=will be adjusted when unit returned in good condition.
Using ZXDSL831Aii in USB mode data 11 Mbps transfe rate is very low.
( presume LAN ethernet card not available in Desktop. . confirm)

If you buy from Amazon, check whether International guarantee for repair/replacement is available.
Check the additional International Shipping charges/customs duties etc.
Also the power adapter should work for 230 VAC~~~~ in INDIA.

Cisco is ( linksys ) and i have not checked CC details in India.
Dlink/Netgear, give service Locations /On Phone assistance etc.

The cisco model ( new ) cost advantage. ( year end sales in U.S )

check similar models in Indian websites.
