    Exclamation Cannot open certain sites on bsnl broadband

    i am facing a weird problem with my bsnl 750ul+ broadband connection

    some 15 days back the bsnl shifted its servers to new ones in their exchange since then some sites do not load fully on my system (eg. live.in, mobile-review, yahoo mail) dropbox cannot upload files

    now its gets more weirder that i can access all these websites fully through a proxy website!!!!!

    i have tried different dns servers(google & open dns) have tried diff. MTU values in the router but with no success

    the bsnl guy says since my router (utstarcom WA3002-g1) is very old and they have updated to latest servers i need to change my perfectly working modem

    should i attempt a firmware upgrade on my router, as i have read that the wa3002 g1 is the same as beetle 450 tc1?

    HELP

    yup tried that too

    @master05
    do you think the problem is due to the outdated router?
    can you suggest some good branded router between 2-2.5k?

    should i attempt a firmware upgrade?

    I really dont feel if the router is the culprit.. because you said you can access all websites using a proxy service. so the problem is not client side.. could be a port error though but it is manageable.
    i was going to tell you "change dns stuff" but you said not helping..

    I advice you to wait for essbebe, he is a master on broadband stuff
    i am sorry but my help is limited here, hope you dont mind

    how will you update the router?

    As you are getting connected to Internet and can surf , exceptffor some websites not accessed, FW upgrade not recommended.

    Usual remedy is to to get the correct MTU value for this problem.

    You can also download TCp/Ip optimizer from speedguide.net
    and check what values of MSS and MTU are selected in Optimal mode.

    Feedback.

    1.
    Try to get one web site say yahoomail by selecting correct MTU.
    Recheck with other web sites.
    2.
    copy/paste result here for further suggestions.
    1) Open an elevated command prompt and type:

    netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces

    and hit Enter.

    You should get a list of all your network adapters installed on your PC
    with MTU values.
    3.
    Worst case scenerio; try another modem ! browser/s

    Many users complain that some websites do not open, and usual suggestion is to change the MTU values in modem.
    Applications are also recommended for trying different
    values.
    Now the following is another method for MTU selection.

    General instruction for finding your optimal MTU size

    Go to Start and select Run.
    Set router to MTU 1500 to start with.
    Start RUN
    Type in cmd (Windows 2000/XP/Vista/7) or command (Windows 98/ME) into the box .
    Hit the enter key or click OK
    At the DOS prompt,
    type in ping bbc.co.uk -f -l 1492
    and hit the Enter key.
    If you get the response "Packet needs to be fragmented but DF set",
    lower the size the packet in increments of +/-10 (e.g. 1472, 1462, 1440, 1400) until you have a packet size that does not fragment.
    Now increase the packet size from this number in small increments until you find the largest size that does not fragment.
    Add 28 to that number (IP/ICMP headers) to get the optimal MTU setting.
    For example, if the largest packet size from ping tests is 1462, add 28 to 1462 to get a total of 1490 which is the optimal MTU setting and can be put in your router's settings
    !
    Hope this helps some of you!?

    @essbebe
    i am getting packet fragment from 1500-1480
    request timed out from 1470-40

    1432 is the highest value where packet dosent fragment
    so mtu is 1432+28=1460 which i have set in my router, but windows shows it to be 1500!!

    @master05
    thanks

    @essbebe

    no it didnt work

    i had already performed the ping test for mtu value, and the highest value at which the packet didnt fragment was 1432 and hence i entered 1460 in the router settings
    now the command "C:\Users\Kavika>netsh interface ipv4 show subinterfaces"
    shows the mtu to be set at 1500
    so i am confused whether the actual value is 1500 or 1460

    Try 1432 itself. for Yahoo mail.
    CHanging Registry entries etc not advised.
    Always make a System Restore Point or back up registry entries, if trying to change MTU value etc in system.

    i used this command to set an mtu value of 1460 under windows
    "netsh interface ipv4 set subinterface "Local Area Connection" mtu=1460 store=persistent"

    although i was having 1460 under my router settings, windows was showing 1500. After this both show 1460 and all sites work

    but one issue remains,often i cannot access my router's page, it keeps on working and displays page cannot be displayed while i can access other websites!!
