I don't think there is any security advantage with type of connection you are using.
These are the two ways just to connect to internet.
But Yes, If you have a limited data usage plan and you are not disabling the automatic update option in every software you use then it may have a financial security issue.

I personally feel that the PPPoE and bridge connection are like the option in data connection in Nokia Mobile Phones which says:
    1. Always Online -- PPPoE
    2. When Needed -- Bridge

P.S. Also If U have some geek neighbours then you are always having risk of security issues with your WiFi.

ppoe probably is more secure but you will need to forward some ports manually.
In bridge connection, all ports are open already but it can be a security risk. Bridge may also helpful incase you have a data cap on your usage. If you have more than one device that connects to internet, you may want ppoe mode.

PPPoE or Bridge are methods of connecting to the internet. Both are equally secure/insecure, meaning that there is nothing that deals with security here.

Your internet connection is better protected by "internet security protection" option from your Anti-virus software as well as a good firewall.

Pardon my ignorance..but can you please tell me how to open/forward ports.

My ipad is seeing the wireless network and connecting to the same but not getting online ( ie no internet connection)

Currently have SMARTAX MT882 ASDL model with Netgear WGR614 v8 wireless router. I have couple other laptops that can get online through wireless network

    Thanks for your response

No question is stupid (answers may be). No one has infinite knowledge.

Port opening/port forwarding: This is a huge topic in itself. There is a website dedicated to this purpose. Port opening/port forwarding is required for playing online games or connecting to peer-to-peer network, viz. torrents.

Regarding why iPad cannot connect, this is a totally different issue and not related to "Port opening/port forwarding". There could be various reasons:

    a) DHCP is off in modem and you are giving manual IP address to laptops. Enable DHCP in modem.
    b) Wireless network security - incorrect pwd entered. Try turning off wireless security for some time and check. If successful, then retry with security enabled.
    c) You may have setup MAC address filtering. Remove this.
