Question Getting 5Mb/s speed on 512kb/s plan!!!!?????

    Hello members,

I know the header of my thread is weird but it's true. Let me describe it first in detail.

I had applied for broadband plan 1350/month (unlimited) on 13th of this month which got activated on the same day. I started downloading the next day. As per the plan i had to get 4Mb/s speed upto 20 GBs and thereafter 512kb/s. This was all ok until yesterday means till 16th of this month (i finished 20 GBs on 15th itself, evening). I also started to get 512kb/s speed as my quota was finished. Ok.

Now the weird thing started on the eve of 16th. I tried to connect but wasn't getting DSL LED on modem. I called S.D.E. in BSNL exchange and he confirmed that there is some problem from Bangalore itself and it will be ok within an hour. I again tried after almost 2 hours and got the DSL LED blinking on modem. As i use a dialer to connect, still i wasn't able to connect. In this process i switched-off and on my modem for at least 10 times and after these attempts i got connected (even when i got that windows warning of "this connection has limited or no connectivity"). I just tried my browser and i was really connected. I checked just for fun what speed i am getting (on speedtest.net of course). And the weird thing started, i got the speed of 5.7Mb/s!!!!! So, i tried on u-torrent and it confirmed speedtest.net results!!!!!

Since then i am getting speed of at least 5Mb/s. My big Q, now, is that how it's possible????? And will BSNL track it and close it or will add all this download as 'Chargeable Units'??????? Please answer me ASAP. I even disconnected several times, even restarted PC, but it takes at least 10 attempts to connect each time and when it connects i get these blazing speeds(every time i even get that windows no connectivity warning balloon).

Please clear my doubt if any one of you had ever experienced such thing. The major fear i am having is that will BSNL charge me for this high-speed downloads even after having unlimited monthly plan??????

    Thumbs up

First step i would recommend is to track your usage online on BSNL portal, it will give you some indication of data utilized and to check what plan you are currently in. Then take the next step forward on the basis of your findings.

It can be an error from their side, incorrect profile setting or can be some other issue. So check the portal and report out the details.

Check your data usage and bill status because you cant belive bsnl....they can even over charge you for this...

Since you're subscribed to unlimited plan, just take a chill pill and download as much as possible.

I had similar experience with Sify unlimited plan few years back. Only difference was that there was no upper limit. Each file used to download at 0.8 Mbps. So I always kept 25 movies/games listed in the uTorrent; and all of them downloaded at 25 x 0.8 Mbps. My Hard Drive used to start making noise because of the high speed downloads. I used to disable many services and switch the Windows theme to classic to free up the resources. Oh, those were crazy days.

Well I am also quite lucky. Getting 3g speeds in Airtel 2G Data plans. Using 250 for 6 Gb data plan and getting 400(3-4 MBPS) KBPS download speed.

    Same with me....

I am currently subscribed to 900 ULF and I used my 8GB limit with 4 Mbps before 15th of this month....

My speed was also reduced to 256 kbps
Now again after 16th I got 4MBPS but after I downloaded another 10-12 GBs of data its back to 256kbps.....

Hope we both were chosen by BSNL as lucky....

Sometimes the usage gets reset, has happened with me twice - once when I forgot to pay the bill and paid it after the 15 day time limit, I got full speeds again after paying the bill.

My advice will be to hold off on downloads for a week or so and allow BSNL to update their usage data. The reason I am saying this is 'cause it sometimes happens that a day or so after a heavy download, though your usage data might now show chargeable units to be very high but after a few more days it picks up and is back on track. It so happened with me a year back wherein I downloaded a huge amount of data (1.36gb) during the day time (peak hrs and I am on the home 500 plan night unlimited!!). I know it was silly of me. But my joy knew no bounds when the next day I checked my usage details and the downloaded data wasn't logged in there! So I thought I should wait for a couple of more days and allow BSNL to update the usage data but they didn't! I was under the impression that probably due to some technical glitch my downloaded data wasn't logged in the usage details although the data from next few days was available in the portal and was updating regularly. I was confused and a little scared as to what to do. Should I go for more downloading and take advantage of BSNL's error or should I wait? So I posted this little problem here in the forum and thanks to some of the experts here, they warned me NOT to go for more downloading and check my usage details again during the last week of the month. So, I took their advice and kept my d/l only to night unlimited time and when I checked my usage details in the last week of the month......THERE IT WAS SITTING..the downloaded 1.36gb smiling at me from that unfortunate day LOL! If I didn't take my friends advice from here, I'd probably have been hit with a huge bill!

I am sure you have too much (20gb of d/l games, movies, tv series etc) on your hand to keep you entertained for a week or so. So, i'd advice you to stick to plain old browsing the web for a few more days and hold on to that urge to download more. It's better to be safe than sorry. You never know what to expect in your next bill!!

Hello Friends, you know what, after i posted my weird situation here my speeds again returned to normal 512kb/s according to the plan. So again i want to know, whether BSNL is gonna charge me for those high-speed downloads?

To wassup.sumu---- I got exactly the same situation as you!!!! The only frightful thing is that the usage records are not getting updated, the last usage is of 16th morning!!!!!

Post replies if you people get something to discuss!!!!!!!

check the summary on top. ( Chargeable units less NU )
In your case it should show 0 ( zero)
