Thread: Shitty Download speed

I've took a 625 combo plan broadband connection from bsnl. They said the download speed would be 256 kbps. but i'm only getting maximum 20 kbps. I cant do anything with that speed. The browsong speed is okay, its good. But when i try downloading something, it is really really slow. I've a UT starcom modem(UT300R2U), one which was with me for sometime. Dont have its driver cd or anything. Dint get a new router from bsnl. Is that why the problem is? Can anyone help with this?

If so, your download speed is 20x8=160kbps
Actual speed of C625 plan is 256Kbps
Check your speed by download files from torrent which has more no. of seeds
or
check speed from any good site.

no its really 20 kbps. 150 mb files takes 3 hrs to download? its 20 kbps. I dunno what to do. Should i complain to Bsnl?

Your plan offers you a speed of 256 kbps(which is equal to 32 KBps), and the speed you are getting is 20 KBps (not 20 kbps). The speed advertised in your plan is 256 kbps(in kbps not in KBps) and the speed you are seeing is in KBps.

256 kbps=32KBps=1/4 Mbps
512kbps=64KBps=1/2 Mbps
1024kbps=128KBps=1 Mbps

They show their speed in kbps or Mbps but we see it in KBps in torrent or in IDM or in some others.

Now, if you are getting 20 KBps it means that you are getting 160 kbps but your plan say it should be 256 kbps = 32 KBps. There are several factors that affects speed like, your distance from BSNL exchange and your modem and windows settings. After 3 Km speed speed may get affected.Dial a phone number from your land line and see if there is some disturbing sound in line. See if everything is connected properly.

There could be more technical reasons behind this so I hope you will definitely get some assistance from this forum. It is also a good idea to inform BSNL exchange about you situation.

The exchange is about 3 km away.. And yeah. I've a hissing sound in the telephone. Everything is connected well and good. What about my moddem. Its an old one. Does it affect the speed and connection.?

Bad line quality could be a reason behind this so I think you should inform exchange that your phone is not working good. If you will tell them that you are not getting appropriate speed according to your plan then they will not take it seriously and will tell you that it is the speed you will get but if you tell them to repair your land line(tell them that you are unable to phone some one because of disturbing sound in your phone) I think they will surely check your phone line. If their lineman fine tunes your phone line then you may see some improvement in your speed. After getting phone line repaired you are still getting low speed then you can ask them to do something.Actually BB Home Combo UL 625 is not a good plan because if you get full speed in this plan you get 30 KBps which is good enough for normal surfing but not good for downloading. go for BB Home UL 750, which is 125 Rs costlier but you get 60 KBps unlimited.

oh.. i see. I thought the 256 was the actual download speed.. Have to upgrade now! Thanks for the help..!!
