Default Need help on Wifi Setup.. urgently!

    Hello to all

Just stumbled upon few good threads and thought about signing up and asking for advice.

I have BSNL bband connection and currently using 750UL plan.
Using the basic modem bsnl provided. Never applied for wi fi one cause never felt the need. But now i do need wifi option.

    1) As i am absolutely clueless, i am confused about purchasing a router or a router + modem? A friend asked me and i am not well informed on this. I thought a router was supposed to carry a modem functionalities as well?

Pls clear this doubt of mine first.

    2) Which wi fi router/modem/router+modem will be better for me in a budget of 2k?
I have requirement of running wifi in a flat of single floor. Few walls which will act as obstructions but i think i wont need a repeater.

    3) Something like WGR614 is a good solution?

Pls do reply asap guys.. in urgent need of getting this resolved.

I agree.to above. I am using Netgear wgr614V6 for past two years.
Tested Range ( wifi ) ground floor approx 30 feet radius.
Unable to pickup wifi from first floor==>> distance to Ground floor approx 50 feet .
    ( "Line of sight" obstructions)
Check the guide for this model. Your ADSL modem may be different.

    Para two:
In your laptop download and install application "Connectify"

    http://www.connectify.me/features/

Connect BSNL adsl modem as usual.
Your Laptop will work as AP ( Access point ) for OTHERwifi systems
limited range. No additional wifi router needed.

Thanks for the fast replies guys.
    BUT..

    1) Although i have the huawei modem provided by BSNL at the start, i dont want to maintain 2 devices.. ie A modem and a router for my wi fi setup. Prefer a 3 in one device as i read on this forum. So please suggest models from that range..

    2) What's the deal with ADSL and ADSL 2 types of routers..?
Can either be used with BSNL connection?

Asking cause a friend had a spare one lying around but i think its ADSL 2 type and as i only started reading about all this, i am clueless.

You can make a request to BSNL to change your modem from Type I to Type IV. The Type IV modem will solve your issues. All modems now supplied are ADSL-2 compliant. Better use ADSL-2.

Read BSNL website for Type I/II/III/IV modems.

    ........spare one lying around
Mention model number. probably listed in my signature links.

If the Type I modem was on rent exchange possible. If purchased
outright, you can RENT a 3-in 1 router. Deposit Rs 1000/= rent Rs 80/PM.
