Question Is BSNL the right choice?

    Hi friends,

I'm a resident of Hyderabad (for those familiar with the Nizami city, I stay in the Masab Tank area).

I've been using Hathway for the last 1 year. Service was very good in the beginning but I've seen them losing it over the last few months. They don't even respond to my complaints, so I've decided to switch over.

    My usage profile:
    - work (corp email, web-meetings, etc)
    - download of music, movies & anime (a few GB each month)
    - voip (to talk to family n friends in US)
    - some chatting & browsing

I've shortlisted Tata Indicom & Dataone.

I'd like to know what the users on this forum think - which one of these 2 ISPs is better for my needs? Is there any other ISP I should consider?

They have very similar plans (256kBps unltd @ Rs.1000/- pm). Each has its own pros n cons.
Overall I've heard some really good feedback about Dataone, while Tata Indicom customers have given it a mixed bag rating, so I'm tending more towards BSNL.
Also, I have a feeling BSNL has some big long-term plan to become India's largest telecom-data-entertainment (aka ICE) infrastructure service provider, and it's better for me a consumer to get in early on the train!

I am also planning to setup a small wireless network at home for more flexibility. For this purpose, I need a modem-cum-wireless-router. A friend told me there's a shortage of these modems at BSNL & it's better for me to buy one from the market. Can you suggest some good models for the same?
I am a tech guy and should be able to set it up as long as it's not rocket science!

BTW, I'm not an existing BSNL landline customer, and will need to get one if I go in for their plan. Is that a big deal?

U have made da rite choice !!
Go 4 bsnl`s UL900 ..Yes, u do need a landline .. bsnl is offering a free landline connection wid a broadband connection these dayz
And if u left hathway for their sloppy customer service than u r likely to face the same problem again .. bsnl`s so called techie employees generally take a fortnight or so for solving even simple problems

Bsnl could provide u with cheaper modems [probabily of availability< .0001]
so u r left with the only option of buying a modem cum wireless router from market !!

BSNL is best till you don't need its customer service and they give good speed but once something goes wrong with your connection then you'll have to go to there office atleast 3 times and still they'll take around 1 week to slove your problem
