Angry Please HELP - Where to get a replacement Modem?

I have BSNL Broadband at my home in Cochin, Kerala. Last week, the modem was damaged due to voltage problem. It doesn't power on. BSNL came and took it for replacement. Now thay say that they have a modem shortage and it will take a long time to get a new modem. I am stuck now. I have to work from home for my U.S employer. My only income source is shut off due to this.

Can I buy a DSL Modem in any store? If so what kind of modem should I buy? where to buy?

I do have another DSL modem that I brought from the U.S. Is it possible to configure it and use it for BSNL Broadband? Will any modem work with BSNL broadband?

Dear friends, please help me with your ideas.
    -Bala.

Just go to market and buy a new modem and when BSNL replaces yours keep the the one you bought in reserve.
You can buy netgear router. They are good. I have used them.

    Default Modem replacement

    hi,

BSNL provides warranty for a modem only for one year and after that its your responsibility .
If you have specfied that the modem went faulty due to volage fluctuations then forget it
    .

you can buy a modem from outside
i wuld prefer Dlink GLB50c for the non wifi or you can get any other ,
i am saying this cos BSNL ppl handle different modems of their own and the only other one most know is of Dlink

Corollary to the above: Computer equipment often fails because of voltage fluctuations. In Mumbai, this is less of a problem but the rest of the country, this is a big issue. I would advise the following electrical connection:

Mains Power ==> UPS ==> Surge Protector with Multiple Sockets ==> Computer + Peripheral Equipment (Routers, Printers, etc.)

My modem also got burned after two years of faithful service. It was only a matter of contacting the exchange and requesting for a new modem. In here, they dont sell modems/routers in shops. Hence we have to stick with BSNL.

U may configure your US router to work with BSNL. Am using UTStar 300R2 modem, flashed with D-Link firmware, without much problems on BSNL.

I would suggest you to visit your bsnl office and see the concerned official (highest) with this issue and explain your situation fully stating that your income is dependent on this, i am sure they might understand it and will help you for sure. They have become more listening to customers now these days. all the best.
