Question VoIP- official status?/technical knowledge needed.

I have BSNL broadband connection and VoIP for internet phone.

At times there is no problem and internet phone gets on easily and stays on till we need it. At that time the comp internet also works well.

But at times the comp internet works well but intenet phone does not get on. This situation may last a few hours to a few days. e.g. it was not working from morning of 7 nov to noon of 9 nov. then internet phone worked ok till 13 nov morning.
Now for past 24 hours it is not getting on, while comp internet is working.

( I have a router, modem ,and VoIP modem).

I would be thankful to get information about the following:-

    1. Is use of VOIP official/permissible on BSNL broad band.

    2. Is it the quality of data transfer which is important in connecting the internet phone. Or it is the quantity which is important?

    3. Does the VoIP uses same band width of braodband which is used by computer or is it different one?

    4. How the problem can be resolved.

If I lodge a complaint with BSNL, there is no one to understand my problem at all.

Thanks for sparing time to read my post.

Here are the answers to your questions.

    1. Is use of VOIP official/permissible on BSNL broad band.

    • Yes it is legal to use voip in India.
    2. Is it the quality of data transfer which is important in connecting the internet phone. Or it is the quantity which is important?

    • Its the speed of the connection (I don't understand what you mean by quantity.) Even a stable 64kbps connection would be enough to get excellent voice quality without any delay provided the packet loss is not too much to the destination you are calling.
    3. Does the VoIP uses same band width of broadband which is used by computer or is it different one?

    • Yes VOIP calls use the same bandwidth which the computer uses and will be counted towards your monthly limit if you have a limited transfer connection. If you use voip 24/7 it would be a good idea to get an unlimited data transfer connection rather then running into huge bills.
    4. How the problem can be resolved.
    • There doesn't seem to be a problem as you say the internet keeps working its just your voip handset which doesnt.
I suggest you also download the soft phone version of your voip service provider and give it a try when your phone isint working to make sure there isint something wrong with the phone itself or the connecting port.

    5. If I lodge a complaint with BSNL, there is no one to understand my problem at all.

    • BSNL broadband guys are not at all bound to help you out with this problem as it doesn't come under their scope of service which they provide you in form of an internet connection.
Please feel free to give me a shout again if ive missed out on anything.

Hey guys .. I am not able to figure out any good VOIP service in India.
I wonder if there are any major VOIP providers in India. Finally i shortlisted IPVAANI which would just cost 2 X 85$ = 130$ for 2 VOIP adapters.
Please check out this product and let me know if its worth it. Suggestions are alwayz welcome

    Thanx
