Default Bsnl broadband -- urgent help needed

I got my net connection( 256 k unlimited plan, UL900plus) from bsnl.
They came installed a moden (ZTE ZXDSL 831 Modem ) but internet didn't worked. Then
the guy took the modem and configured it and said that no password and username
is required because it is unlimited plan, just go & connect.
Trouble is i am unable to connect to the net. Its showing connected but no page is opening.
Page 192.168.1.1 is opening, but I dont know the settings are ok or not??

Also when the modem is on, the red light(power) as well as the green light(PC/USB) is on
and the DSL light(amber) is also on & internet light is not glowing.
The modem is connected to the ethernet port of the computer
Any idea what to do to get online ?? Modem setting are wrongly configured by the guy??

    Default question

btw my qstn for the new thread is:

Can someone tell me wat is the speed of bsnl broadband home UL 900 plus at present? also when they say "speed is upto 2 Mbps", does it mean dnload speed or bandwidth?

    Also:

    1. I tried the BSNL broadband speed tester - it showed me speeds from 97 kbps to 1.72 Mbps - is this info correct?

    2. If answer to 1 is yes, then why is the maximum download speed in utorrent not more than 31 kbps? DO I need to change some settings?
    TIA,
    Avichal

You need to enter your bsnl data one user name and password. The guy who came to install your connection was an idiot. Just get your user name and password and you will be fine.

Do give us a shout if there is still a problem.

Posting a new thread is pretty easy just go to http://www.indiabroadband.net/bsnl-broadband/ and you see an icon which says new thread just click on it and you get to a new screen where you put the title of the thread and then the matter or whatever query you may have.

Up to 2mbps means that your speed can be anything from 256kbps to 2mbps. It has got nothing to do with the amount of data transfer, it refers to the rate of transfer and not amount.

The speed you get while using torrents can be very misleading at times as it all depends on the number of users connected at any given time and the speed at which they are uploading so the best way to check your speed would be by using a speed test script like : Broadband speed test - Broadband Forum

Do give us a shout again if there is something you still didint understand.. I would be most willing to start from scratch again

Hope you find this post useful
