please also suggest some good wi fi modem for this connection.budget Rs 2500 max, thanks.will rebooting the modem help-the bsnl chap tried that but the modem never rebooted -took a long time etc download speed1.66 Mb/s ,upload speed 0.40 Mb/s latency 85 ms- as recorded using speedtest.in

1.66Mb/s downstream and .40Mb/s downstream is decent enough for a 2mbps connection with an upload max of 512kbps. Expecting your connection to push 2mbps constantly would be wishful thinking.

Your line quality is not the best I have seen so that is an area your line man could work on. Please check the SNR and attenuation values provide by Just4kix to get an idea what to expect. It is your line quality which causes frequent drops in adsl connection.

Your modem should not be a problem but if you still have doubts then borrow someone's modem for a few hours and see how that goes. Looking at the data you have posted above it is just your phone line that is causing this. You could ask your local exchange to check your line and double check the connections in the local box, clean the terminals may be and see if that makes any difference.

If you are looking to buy a new modem that has an inbuilt router then you could have a look at this one : D-Link DSL - 2750U
I have used this modem for some time with MTNL and it did what it is supposed to do and is well within your budget so you might want to look at this one. There are plenty others aswell so just have to look around a bit and check user reviews.
