The alternate method works. I set PPPoE on the BSNL model, turned on DHCP there, and disabled DHCP in WRT54G. It all works now. Except ..
I had set 192.168.2.1 as the 'Local IP Address' for the WRT54G, but am not able to access that URL any more. How can I access the WRT54G admin page?
TIA,
Prakash
It's wonderful.
set the linksys ip to say 192.168.1.100 .. but remember it should be outside the router dhcp range.. say bsnl router dhcp range is 192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.10 .. you can have your linksys ip from anywhere between 192.168.1.11 - 192.168.1.254..but not between 192.168.1.3 - 192.168.1.10
Hi I am new to the forum. couple of days back I was suffering. I had a BSNL modem mentioned and Lynksys router and did not know how to connect them. Struggled for a few days. My agony was only increased by BSNL's pathetic customer service. They almost refused to help set up ( they said ' bring the laptop to us'. Almost as if that would solve the problem).
Thanks to you I just followed this help guide and set it up succesfully.
I do not how to thank you. It is a wonderful thing to take pains to puttogether. Why can't the BSNL customer service dept do such things?
Regards
Krish
You are most welcome.
I understand your frustration with BSNL. To be fair to BSNL, they are not oblidged to help with a device that is not supplied/supported by them.
This is where open community checks in and there are forums such as ours to help. I sincerely thank you for your kind words of appreciation but I am a small fry. I can only that I can help with the equipment that I own/have. There are many others in this forum who do their own bits and pieces to help out.

Thanks Just4kix. Thanks a bunch for the document and taking time to answer queries. The doc really helped.
I'm hoping I can find more answers here. I sent a separate post regarding the same. After configuring the WRT54G router with MT882 modem, the internet speed dropped big time. About 140Kbps. Any suggestions? Is this common or did I just end up with a defective router?
hello,
i had setup the connection in bridge mode as per just4kix's instructions. its been about a month since i did that setup and now i notice i cannot open the BSNL modem page. how do i get about this problem? even when i connect to BSNL line directly (w/o wireless router interfearence) the modem page does not open. it is 192.168.1.1
here are my ipconfig/all details:
PPP adapter BSNL:
connection specific DNS suffix:
Description......:WAN(PPP/SLIP) Interface
physical address.......:00-53-45-00-00-00
DHCP enabled.........:no
IP address............:117.192.196.199
subnet mask..............:255.255.255.255
default gateway............:117.192.196.199
DNS servers................:218.248.255.146
218.248.255.139
NetBIOS over Tcpip.........isabled
Have you disabled DHCP in UT-300R2U? Are you sure that UT-300R2U's default address is 192.168.1.1?
you probably arent getting an ip.. either enable DHCP as just4kix said or enter ip manually under control panel->network connections->Local area connection properties->Tcp/ipv4 properties
@just4kix: yes, I'm sure that 192.168.1.1 is the BSNL router address. I may have accidentally disabled DHCP in the BSNL modem. I do not remember doing it explicitly though.
@superprash: i will do that, i will enter 192.168.1.1 and let you know what happened..
thanks..
when i check the ip in my network its not highlighted its shown as obtain ip address automatically
Please continue this discussion here (Setup of UT-300R2 with Linksys WRT54G)

Thanks for the post.
Thanks for your efforts !
Thanks! This is a great step-by-step doc. I didn't miss any step and it worked like a dream.
However, in the 'Basic Wireless Settings' there is a 'Wi-Fi Protected Setup' option. Could someone tell me if I am missing out a more secure setup by choosing the 'Manual' option on my WRT54G2?
Thanks in advance.
Anand
