Question how can i calculate the effective speed of my connection?

alright,i know know that the speed connection dealers or companies tell us is not the one that we get while surfing or downloading different stuff..like in my broadband from BSNL..they say the speed would be 10 mbps..but i am only getting 30-40 kbps at the maximum..is there any different criteria to calculate that speed?i hope its not a dumb question..but i really don't get it??

Well if you are getting 30-40 kbps then you must be having 256 kbps connection or 512 kbps connection because 10 mbps has not been launched in residential sector. So who ever is telling you 10 mbps is just lying.

if your looking in your modems snr readings and it says ~10000kbits , it shows the max speed you can get from your land line!!your actual internet speed depends on the dataplan you hav choosen,if you have ul900 ull get max 256kbps(32KBPS),if u choose home500 max 2000kbps(250KBPS)!!

for better understanding, for example you had 6000kbps snr & ur plan had speeds upto 8mbits, ull get only 6mbits coz ur landline cant handle more than 6mbits!!but since u hav 10000kbits its pretty good and u dont hav to worry abt any future speed upgrades from bsnl if any!!

I don't think that our landlines are just tapped to 6 mbps. I think they can handle more then this and i am sure about it.

actually if bsnl starts using adsl2+ theoretically we can get upto 24mbits!!but bsnl doesnt& if you live far away from the exchange u might not even get 6mbits!!
