Login to the router and acccess your router ui and look at the DHCP's Client Table. It will tell you the how many machines are connected currently. You can also get the IP/MAC/and the pc's name.
However, when you are about to check, there may not be any "foreign" connections. The best way is to protect your wifi connection. There are two ways to go about it:
a) Protect by enabling MAC id filter
b) WEP or WPA protection
I suggest WPA protection. Your wifi router guide will tell you how to enable WPA protection.
