It sounds like some network issue..If it happens during peak time than it could be congestion issues on the DSLAM but if it happens randomly then probably try a different Modem and if that also doesn't make any difference then call ur ISP and get ur services checked

Good Luck

Default speed

Guys dont trust the speedometer in bsnl portal page..... There is something wrong with their software... once i got 341.87 MBPS.... Still i havent got over with that hangover.... Abhishek even i am experiencing the same probs , the connection is fluctuating( like it comes, and then gets off, then i have to reset modem).... its the ISP problem... What i did was , i complained and they changed the port in exchange...now things are fine...

Default Maximum Speed

Theoritically speaking BSNL provides 2 types of connection unlimited and limited data types and in unlimited plans there is a speed cap that is taken care by the NOC Banglore which is also mapped with the username that you are using and not the media.
Limited plans are free to use the bandwidth as per the avalibility.
Theoritically ADSL technology states that it will work to a max distance of 7 Km and that too with a flaw less cable , where as BSNL having laid cable for over a period of 5 to 8 years have been hit by many operators like water works, road and so on and a lot of damage induces DC voltages and some times even AC voltages in the telephone line causing a lot of disturbance and is not compatable with data.
The other problem is the exposed cable beingg in ground gets earthed or can be stated as acting as a earthing wire this is not very good as this will cause frequent disconnecting and no ADSL lamp in the modem resulting in 678 Error.

In the DSLAM equipment BSNL sets the configuration as Download 256Kbps to 2048 Kbps and Download from 64Kpbs to 512Kbps (in most cases and hence the speed should range in these values only).

I have received the BB speed in the range of 500Kbps Down and 350Kbps Down even though i am directly connected in the Exchange.( In the Exchange) and some times in the range of 1.8Mbps Download

The speed will also depend on the number of users connected and the quality of the Optical Fibre also and finally the last factor will be the International Gateway that can also allocate the Priority to certain level of Ip address depending on the traffic.

Regarding the NIB and NOC ,

NIB as said is just another name for BSNL internet Backbone consisting of 8 Core Routers and 21 and above Middle routers .

Each broadband is connected to a DSLAM(Digital Subscriber Line Multiplexer) which in turn is conected to a Tier -II switch through OFC and a set of Tire II switches in a ring are connected to the TIER I swtich in the City ,

these Tier I switches are further connected to the Core Routers and hence for a vast network beyond imagination and further they are planning to add equipment of another 5 lakhs in Andhra Pradesh Only.

NOC is a center consisting of BSNL, UTStar , ZTE and HCL people collabrating together for the maintenance and control of the entire system for India and hence are always busy.

I believe that many ppl complain that the phones for the Broadband ppl are always engaged that is bcos of more problems and very less skilled and patient staff .

Hope BSNL changes its stand towards cust service and competetion

The present speed in most of the places is 144Kbps and can be improved to 2.4 Mbps with adding an additional equipment which is being taken up in many areas and hence a EVDO may have a range uptill 2Mbps , but the PCMCIA card will have the max of 144kbps only as connectivity is in 1X speeds that is 2 to 3 times of dialup speeds.
