Correct in essentials. I am a triffle puzzled on why some of you are still facing issues. My doubt now turns to whether TCP/IP is correctly set or not.

I use Windows/XP Professional on my home desktop and office laptop. Networking is built in in XP/Pro but not in XP/Home. Please check your TCP/IP settings. All router guides explain in detail on how to setup TCP/IP for various OS's such as Windows 95/98, Windows 2000, Windows/XP, etc. You must have TCP/IP set up as follows (equivalent XP setting):

- Obtain IP Address automatically
- Obtain DNS Server Address automatically

It is 5:44 pm right now and I am driving home. I shall be online in an hour or so. Send me messages at Yahoo or 'bump' this topic.

@player, I could not check your JPEGs at office because at my office we have implemented Websense (Web Security, Internet Filtering and Internet Security Software - Websense, Inc.) and it blocks/filters many sites, communicators, etc. I will do so at my home.

yes i have a type iv modem i.e.siemens sl2_141,i have turned the modem to pppoe but still ended up with no results,i am posting some screen shots (thanks for telling how to take them) and please point where i am wrong.

thanks
Please refer to your screen shot 3. At the bottom there is a drop-down list box called 'Encapsulation Mode'. It is currently set to LLC/SNAP - Bridging. I have reason to suspect that this is not correct. What are the other options? Is there an option called LLC/SNAP or just LLC. If yes, please change it and report. Thanks.

I am stumped! Try reseting the router and starting all over again. If that does not work, try a firmware upgrade.

Firmware upgrade is easy. First you download the firmware from the official web site. Usually it is a .bin file. The router has the option of firmware upgrade in the web setup menu. Basically you upload the file that you saved on your disk and click on 'Update' button.

Firmware upgrade should be done as a last resort. In any case I could not locate firmware for SL2-141.

hello just4kix
i am sorry to give you hell of troubles ,lets forget everything and get started all over again i will be simple and straight forward this time.
it will be question and answer alright.

q1)both the laptops are connected to the router i.e.siemens sl2-141 okay, but how do i access internet ? i am able to surf the internet through one of the laptops only and i.e.by creating a dial up connection and selecting the option 'i want to make a broadband connection' then the connection is done and after that i enter username password and click connect, okay it is connected.

q2)i have selected the option pppoe in my router config page, but i cant find an option always on instead i have this option 'dial on demand' what does this mean?

q3)how do i know that the modem is dialing automatically how do i check it?

q4)i am not able to get an ip address when the option 'obtain ip address automatically' is selected i dont know why? the connection shows 'limited or no connectivity' so i entered the ip address 192.168.1.4 manually and it is working fine but the manual which i downloaded from this forum is saying that i have to select the option 'obtain ip address automatically' ,i am totally puzzled!!!

please help (agian)

This means that you are still in the bridge mode because in the bridge mode, a bridge is created between private network (intranet) and public network (internet) and you have to manually login (dial) to the ISP's BRAS to connect to internet. You login via the manual dialers from the PC/laptop.

Start all over again. Reset the modem completely to factory setting by depressing the RESET button on the back panel of the router with blunt pointed object. Keep the RESET switch pressed at least for 15/20 seconds and the SL2-141 must be powered on during this time.

Follow the multiple connections primer (guide) in its principles (screen will be different, the idea is same). You sent me the screen shots. Set up PPPoE as follows:

a) Screen 1: Click on the Edit button of pppoe_0_35_1.
b) Screen 2: VPI = 0, VCI = 35
c) Screen 3: Connection Type = PPPoE, Encapsulation = LLC or equivalent
d) Screen 4: Username = <username>, Password = <pwd>, Service Name = leave blank, Authentication = Auto, Dial on Demand = unchecked
e) Screen 5: IGMP = unchecked, WAN = checked, Service name = pppoe_0_35_1
f) Screen 6: Click on Save

Important: Go back to screen 1, and click on 'Save and Reboot'.

Screen 1 should show status as 'Connected' or something like that.

You can implement wireless security and admin pwd change later.

Redo PPPoE as explained above. If you uncheck 'Dial on Demand', it means always on. In a PPPoE connection, if you check 'Dial on Demand' then the connection will be broken after the number of minutes specified in "Inactivity Timeout (minutes)".

Suppose 'Dial on Demand' is checked and timeout = 5, it means that if you remain on a webpage for more than 5 minutes then the connection will be broken. Say, after 10 minutes, you navigate to a new page then, modem will dial in again, establish connection and then navigate to the new page. This will means that some time is lost.

Check for DHCP settting in your modem. It may be set to 'off' or 'disabled' or 'relay'. With DHCP disabled (or relay), your IP addresses must be set manually or by the relay server.
