The problem is that your modem/router is configured as a bridge and you have to dial-in using a PPPoE. This will work only for one laptop/desktop.

Configure your type IV modem/router in PPPoE mode (always ON connection). Using this method, the modem dials in automatically and sets up internet connection as soon as it is powered on. Just connect your laptops to the modem/router (wired or wireless) and you are all set. There is no further requirement of dialing from laptops as this is already done.

Note that your internet bandwidth will be shared by all the machines connected.

The Siemens SL2-141 device is a modem + router with wireless functionality. The modem's function is to dial-in and connect to internet; the router's function is to assign unique IP addresses to each connected device and route the communication from connected to devices to internet or other machines in the network.

When you dial for the first time, the modem is free - it dials and connects you to internet. Now if you connect another machine to the network, you cannot dial in again. The modem is already busy and hence you will get "phone busy" error message.

To setup and always on connection, reconfigure your modem to select PPPoE method. Here is the Quick Start Guide and here is the User Manual. Refer to the quick start guide and page 37 of the user manual.

Note that VCI/VPI values should be 0 and 35 respectively.

    As I said before:

    a) Configure your modem/router in PPPoE mode so that it can dial automatically. In this mode, it will connect to internet as soon as it is powered on.
    b) Whether your machines are connected, powered on and you have logged in to Windows, will make no difference to the modem/router; the modem/router would already be ready to serve you for internet.
    c) As soon as you log in on your machines and connected to the modem/router (wired or wireless) you are ready to surf. There is no need of dialing anymore.

It will be difficult to guide you step by step as I do not have your modem; but I have seen the guide and the quick-start guide is particularly good.

    Regards,
    j4x

How? And why? Why introduce another factor into a simple setup. The idea of a Home network should be KISS (Keep it Super Simple).

i am still not able to figure it out !!! i am really confused and have lost my patience

just4kix as you have said switch to always on mode, i have switched the router to always on mode but i am unable to surf the net and when i try to dial the connection it says 'the phone line is busy'.but when i uncheck the dial on demang feature then its normal i am able to dial and net is working.

the second laptop is detecting the router and is successfully connected to it but then what i am unable to surf the net on that.

i have gone through your guide but still ended up with no results

and can you please tell me how to take the screenshots as it will be a lot easier to explain my problem

    please help

When you have configured the modem/router in always on mode (PPPoE), why are you trying to dial again? The modem/router is already doing that - and it has already done that. Naturally you will get a "phone busy" signal if you try to dial again. Imagine you have parallel telephones at home. If there is a phone conversation going on one phone, can you use the other parellel phone to dial again?

    You must do the following:

If you have only one modem/router (wired)
    a) Configure your (ADSL) router/modem in PPPoE mode.
    b) If it is Type I (1 USB + 1 LAN), connect one machine to USB (install drivers first) and one to LAN.
    c) Get rid of any dialers on the PC/laptop. They are not required.

If you have one modem/router (wired) with another router (wired or wireless) or a network switch/hub
    a) Configure your main (ADSL) router/modem in PPPoE mode.
    b) Connect your wired/wireless router in Automatic DHCP mode. Those who have a network switch, do the same.
    c) Connect your PC or laptop to LAN ports 1~4 (wired connections) or connect them wirelessly.
    d) Get rid of any dialers on the PC/laptop. They are not required.

To take pictures of screen shots, do this:

    a) Open the application whose screen shot is desired
    b) While this window is modal (title bar should be blue coloured; not grey), press one of the following:
    - Alt+Printscreen: to capture the modal window only
    - Pritscreen: to capture the entire desktop
The screen shot is now captured to clipboard
    c) Open MS-Paint.
    d) Use the paste function to paste the screenshot
    e) Save the picture (preferably in JPEG format to reduce size)

@player, from another post I read, I think that you have a Type IV modem. Am I correct?

If that is the case, then do the following:

    a) Configure your (Type IV) router/modem in PPPoE mode.
    b) Connect your machines to LAN ports 1~4 (wired connections) or wirelessly.
    c) Get rid of any dialers on the PC/laptop. They are not required.

have u tried using a bridge connection. it is easier to do so. u have to make a connection dialer to dial to the internet.

add a new wan connection in ur router configuration using vpi/vci as 0/35. and taking LLC encapsulation and dont make any further changes to ur configuration. after u have finished making the wan connection. reboot the router. this is the main step to do.

bridge mode can not be used to connect multiple devices simultaneously independant of each other.in bridge mode one machine(laptop/desktop) must act as a kind of gateway to which other machines connect.if that machine is off none of the remaining machines can connect.

Correct in essentials. I am a triffle puzzled on why some of you are still facing issues. My doubt now turns to whether TCP/IP is correctly set or not.

I use Windows/XP Professional on my home desktop and office laptop. Networking is built in in XP/Pro but not in XP/Home. Please check your TCP/IP settings. All router guides explain in detail on how to setup TCP/IP for various OS's such as Windows 95/98, Windows 2000, Windows/XP, etc. You must have TCP/IP set up as follows (equivalent XP setting):

    - Obtain IP Address automatically
    - Obtain DNS Server Address automatically

It is 5:44 pm right now and I am driving home. I shall be online in an hour or so. Send me messages at Yahoo or 'bump' this topic.

@player, I could not check your JPEGs at office because at my office we have implemented Websense (Web Security, Internet Filtering and Internet Security Software - Websense, Inc.) and it blocks/filters many sites, communicators, etc. I will do so at my home.

Please refer to your screen shot 3. At the bottom there is a drop-down list box called 'Encapsulation Mode'. It is currently set to LLC/SNAP - Bridging. I have reason to suspect that this is not correct. What are the other options? Is there an option called LLC/SNAP or just LLC. If yes, please change it and report. Thanks.

I am stumped! Try reseting the router and starting all over again. If that does not work, try a firmware upgrade.
