I dont have a bsnl connection and I am at Newdelhi so cant really comment on your question.. The only thing I can suggest is do not connect your modem with your pc using USB as it does use up a little bit of resources and as I read from your other thread your system is a little outdated so I suggest you use the ethernet port and in my experience USB is prone to problems and ethernet works like acharm regardless of your operating system

There are a lot of members here who are using bsnl broadband so lets wait for them to come online and reply to your query.

Does your PC have Ethernet LAN (built-in or PCI card)? If not, then your only option is USB connection and that will limit your choice to Type-I modem only.

    I will recommend the following:

    a) If your PC has ethernet LAN, then go for Type-II or Type-IV modem. This will mean that you will be able to setup Wireless Network at home.
    b) Even if your PC does not have a LAN card, buy a Gigabit LAN card from eBay. They are as cheap as Rs. 350 and then go for Type-II or Type-IV modem.

The problem is that BSNL does not have Type-II or Type-IV modems ready in stock.

Most of the times the modem/router that you get from BSNL are UTStarCom's ADSL modem UT-300R2U (type I). This is a non wi-fi model and has one USB and one Ethernet LAN port. It appears that BSNL has a sort of OEM contract with UTStarCom. For Type II/IV options, you get another UTStarCom model.

These modem/routers are fairly stable. I have read from some threads that there is problem for setting up Virtual Server in this modem which is a must for online gaming. I don't know as I do not play online games. It works fine with me and I have no complaints.

You can check up this modem on the net (google it).

u should purchase a ethernet modem if u are a single user(TYPE-1 MODEM).

IF U DONT HAVE A LAN CARD , THEN PURCHASE ONE FROM THE MARKET(RS 650)

Absolutely. A LAN card will not be a waste of investment.

The Netgear wi-fi modem DG834G is an excellent choice as all-in-one router: Modem, Router, Wireless Lan. Price = Rs. 3500/- plus shipping over eBay.

No problems at all. I can understand your issues.

You will have to decide upon the following:

    a) Do you wish to go with wired connection for just now? Then go for BSNL Type I modem (1 USB, 1 Ethernet). You can always buy a separate wireless modem later on when you can afford it. This way you initial investment in modem is Rs. 1200/-.

    b) You could opt for BSNL Type II or Type IV modem for Rs. 1800/-. However I have heard that they are not always in stock and hence connection could be delayed.

    I will suggest option (a).

Note that your initial cost of installation from BSNL will include the following:

    1. Installation Cost = Rs. 250/-
    2. Modem Cost = Rs. 1200/-
    3. Security Deposit = Rs. 500/- (refundable)
    4. Registration Charges = Rs. 100/-
    5. First month's plan amount (apportioned for the period from date of installation till billing cycle end date)
    6. Next month's plan amount

All the above will be appearing on your next monthly telephone bill.

You do not have to pay the BSNL person who does the installation anything. But a small gratuity (tip) is helpful (Alas, This is India )

    hello aruncse30

i would recommend to you that you should buy the router from your own choice
of manufacturer i.e.not from bsnl, as you have said that you have rs 4k to burn
it is more than enough to buy a flawless router from good manufacturers like Asus,Netgear,Linksys,Buffalo etc.

Because the routers cum modem from these companies have enough firepower that they will simply beat the bsnl router in one go!!!!
