prefer using a ethernet connection, that provide u with better speeding and port forwarding too. try using a modem with two ethernet connector. or u may buy a extra LAN CARD

LAN is always better to go with as it is much faster then the USB. So it would be good if you use your modem/internet from your Lan.

That is not true. Whereas it true than Ethernet is faster than USB, USB or Ethernet will not affect broadband speed as both are capable of transmission rates that way-way above the BB connection speed. The only issue with USB is that you will require a driver and that will consume some system resources (memory) but not a lot. This will be an issue only if your system has 256 MB or less.

Like i asked the Airtel representative who came to install modem at my home and he said me that using LAN would give more speed then it would give in USB. So you mean to say that he has guided me wrong?

    Yes and no...

Using usb or Ethernet cable only makes it faster or slower for your computer to communicate with the modem and thats the only thing which it effects but your over all speed will remain the same.

Him saying Ethernet is faster is true as well but the speed at whcih a usb cable will communicate is way faster then any broadband available in India so it doesn't make any difference atall.

For internet, LAN will not give you better speeds over USB - speeds will be identical and that is a fact. Consider this:

    - LAN connection will operate at 10 Mbps or 100 Mbps (Mega bits); there are some new LAN Cards called as Gigabit LANs that operate at 1000 Mbps.
    - USB 1.1 will operate at 12 Mbps (Mega bits)
    - USB 2.0 will operate at 480 Mbps (Mega bits)
    - The fastest internet connections are currently at 8 Mbps (Mega bits)

But LAN has advantage because you can just connect the modem to PC by the RJ45 cable and it is ready to use - no drivers, no installation, etc.
