justforkix,
thanks so much for your guides. I still havent run/executed them yet, but I had a few preliminary questions...

I have a BSNL broadband connection on a huawei modem. I tried running the linksys wizard to set up the connection, but it was unsuccessful in connecting to the internet post the config.

I've gone through your guides and my questions are as follows:

1. you mention a username and password, but I doubt I have these, unless I have missed something somewhere. My BSNL connection is always on,

IP: 192.168.1.41
gateway: 192.168.1.1

dns: 61.1.96.69
dns2: 61.1.96.71

ive never been asked for a password, and even when I want to connect my wired connection to any other computer apart from my desktop, I just have to plug the above ip's and dns' in and I am ready to use. Do I have a different sort of connection? or do I also have a username and password, and if so how do I dig it out?

2. while using the linksys wizard, it asked me for the type of connection, so I took staticIP and put in all of the above. Post this it was not able to connect, (since the IPs etc are local I guess) so technically if it isnt static, what type of connection is it?

I will run your guides when I am home later, but would greatly appreciate a response to these questions, thanks!

If you are refering to BSNL username/password (and you have never changed the password), then the password should be 'password' (without quotes). Since you are in always on mode, you are connected in PPPoE mode. The username should be visible in your modem settings. Some modems donot even bother to mask the password.

Do not use the Linksys Wizard program. It does not work in India. Go for manual setup just as I have explained in my two guides. Since your Huawei modem (I call it hawa-hawai ) is in PPPoE mode, setup the Linksys router in Automatic DHCP (or bridge) mode. Just follow the guide and it should work.

ok justforkix, I tried your guide out "multiple connections primer (updated)", but did not work :-(

my PPPoE was already set up, so I set up DHCP server on my huawei... then set up the linksys to accept automatic configuration - DHCP, but to know avail

in the end when I click status, there are a few marked differences from the screenshot you have put in...

Firmware Version: v7.00.1 May.4, 2006 (Same)
Current Time: Not Available (NOT SAME)
Router Name: WRT54G (same)
Host Name: <Blank> (same)
Domain Name: <blank> (same)

Login Type: Automatic Configuration - DHCP (same)
IP Address: 192.168.1.3 (same)
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0 (same)
Default Gateway: 0.0.0.0 (NOT SAME)
DNS1: <blank> (NOT SAME)
DNS2: <blank> (same)
DNS3: <blank) (same)

From your note above, it is quite clear that Huawei and Linksys are not connected. Otherwise you should get the default gateway as 192.168.1.1 (or the same internal IP address as that of Huawei ADSL modem).

What is the internal IP address of your Huawei ADSL modem router? And what the internal IP address of the Linksys router? Both need to be different. For example, if the IP addr of Huawei ADSL modem router is 192.168.1.1, then the Linksys router must be on a different sub-net, say 192.168.2.1.

DHCP must be set to ON on both devices.

No problem, friend. Usually a small error/missout happens but that results in total failure.

Dear Justforkix,
one more question... when my ADSL used to connect to my desktop straight, the following IP's were used for the modem

IP: 192.168.1.41
Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway: 192.168.1.1

DNS: 61.1.96.69
DNS2: 61.1.96.71

these have not been put into the router config or anything. And I notice that everytime the power blows, once the router re-connects I am not able to access the internet, till I take my laptop (which is using the above IP's for LAN settings), connect my laptop to the ethernet coming out of the ADSL modem, and then once the connection is working on the laptop, connect the ethernet cable back into the assigned 'internet' port of the linksys router.

I have a feeling the loss of connectivity is because the DNS's are not in the router config... what shud I do about this? please let me know, thanks

more bad news, the entire set up has totally stopped working...

PVC-0 as I said has gone red, there is a CRC error on the upstream of 2239, and some 8 on the downstream...

I have no idea what is causing this since nothing has changed since yesterday

one power cut came, i just restarted the modems and it was working fine, after the second one I've restarted and nothing has happened.

also on checking the router, the default gateway has gone back 0.0.0.0

justforkix, would really appreciate your help, thanks

Your settings could have been lost or corrupted. You could start over by reseting both the devices.

Add both machines to a workgroup. After that you would be able to see both machines in "my network places".

DNS entries are optional. If you donot put them anywhere, they will default to those provided by BSNL. Else you can use OpenDNS settings - which are much better that BSNL's DNS.

p/s This four weeks, I am in USA. I am getting rocking speeds. Man, I am green with envy/jealousy.

Default Configuring Static IP

hi,

My subscriber has opted for a static IP which was provided by BSNL as he wanted it for his office network and now he wants me to configure it.
How can i configure the Static IP in the UT300r2u modem and how is that useful in a network
