Default How do Speed Tests work?

Most speed tests work this way:

    a) A small file is downloaded from the test server. Sometimes this is done multiple times.
    b) The same file is uploaded - sometimes multiple times.

The average download and upload time is calculated and displayed. So even Speedtest.Net results can be misleading - although it is believed to be most accurate.

To all those with limited plans: Beware of speedtests. This will definitely add to your limits. So do not do this too often.

Yes, true many of them thinks that using speed test regularly will not affect their usage which in fact is not true, it will in fact be counted in your usage (even if you use bsnl's test option)!

That definitely means that the network is down. It happened to me on 26-Jan. Call up the BSNL Helpline (1-800-424-1600).

    @ashok & just

1.Well I am not having all the technical knowledge about the BB terms..........but i can assume what port binded means that connection (id & pass) alloted to specific user works for his own not for any other. Am i rite?

2.well mine ip is like 5x.xx.xx.xx series & i guess its not port binded....so am i at risk if anybudy knows my pass.........well what i wanna to know that......how to check ur connection/DSLAM is port binded or not?

    BTW Wht is DSLAM??

excuse me for being Newbie in this field....hope i am not irritating u ppl

@logik, Port-binding in a nutshell means that the Dataone BB username is tied to the phone number. So effective one can use the dataone connections only from that phone line. The easiest way of knowing whether there is port-binding or not is to check the real IP address. If the real IP address is 117.x.x.x then there is port binding. But just to make sure, call up the exchange and check.

Since your IP address is 5x.x.x.x, your BB connection must not be port-binded. BTW, where do you live?

DSLAM means Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer. Check out here: Digital subscriber line access multiplexer - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Please check your real ip address once your are connected to the internet (from the router's status page thru its web interface).

If your real ip address is something like 117.x.x.x then your connection is port binded. If it is something like 5x.x.x.x then it is not.

I had used BSNL broadband for 2 months and as er my experince i would not that say that it sucks in any ways except its high prices and low speed. I had never faced any problem with them.

    Thumbs down 117.* Doesn't justify

Every one here is saying that if the exchange provides port binding service then password theft (or using others account is not possible).

I asked the exchange people and they told me that all IDs are port binded.

But i am still able to use others Id from my computer.

My IP address is of the order 117.* then what is the use of Port Binding.

Note: the user Id and password is alloted to my friend living near to me. His IP is also in the range of 117.*

Perhaps I am getting old and senile.
in this case u meant to say that we dont need to write any script for restarting the modem??

That is correct. Since the plan is unlimited and I get the same bandwidth (day or night), at least in theory, there is no need for any logoff/login at night.

Default Port binding in P2 and P3

The difference between 59.x.x.x IP and 117.x.x.x IP is that users are in different platforms. (Even account checking sites are also different. Intranet IP for 59.x.x.x and a general site for 117.x.x.x). BSNL people call these as P2 and P3 (multiply). In P2 port binding is not possible in small capacity DSLMS. Roughly it can be say as small exchanges. In P3 port binding is possible in all DSLMS.

If 117.x.x.x IP users are not port binded it may be due to technical flaws or ignorance of exchange people. Also the port binding is automatic. It will be binded with in first few uses for new account. Don't try the username and password of a new connection on a different ADSL phone line.
