But I don't want to buy Modem from BSNL. So, PLZ suggest me a good Modem which will fulfil my requirements as mentioned below :

    2. I can transfer Data between my Desktop and Laptop using modem whether i am connected to net or not.

    3. I can use my current TATA indicom connection (or USB Modem, Datacards) on Desktop and Laptop using same modem at a same time.

    4. Maximum Range should be 1500 Rs. or little higher.

    5. What is Maximun effective Range in Home (like 5, 10, 20 , 25 mtr.)

    6. Should be Netgear or Dlink as both are easily available. (And i wanna go for netgear)

    A. For this purpose you should opt for a Type IV modem/router that has built in wireless capability. There are quite a lot of such devices avaiable but prices are well above Rs. 1,500/- (Q4)

    A. You can do that. You need to switch on the modem/router so that your home network is on. You do not have to connect to internet but you will still be able to transfer files, print document (with a networked printer), etc.

    A. This is possible.

    A. This may be difficult. You can opt for BSNL's Type IV modem which is for Rs. 1800/-. But you said you do not wish to buy BSNL's modem. Why is that? Check prices over eBay.

    A. The typical unhindered range of a wireless router is 100 feet. But at home there are barriers such as walls and RF devices such as microwave ovens. So for practical purposes, install the modem to a central location in the house/flat so that you get the maximum out of the radius.

    A. Choice of company is up to you. Both Netgear and Dlink are good choices. Linksys is even better but costlier. Siemens SL2-141 is also a good choice and I can recommend it.

    A. Ethernet is available always. USB is also mostly available. Check the specs first. Once again Siemens SL2-141 is a good choice as it has USB, Ethernet and Wireless.

Theoratically you can connect 999 networked devices (computers, printers, wi-fi phones, etc.) to a router. But then a home wireless router will not be able to cope up with such a network. For practical purposes, a wireless router can support 50 devices.

I do not think that BSNL will provide the modem of your choice - they will provide the modem of their choice.

BSNL will most likely provide a wi-fi Type IV modem from UTStarCom. UTStarCom is not a bad company. The cost of the Type IV modem is advertised on the BSNL Tariff page. It is Rs. 1800/- for outright purchase which I think is a fair price.

    .

1)Shall do that as soon as i reach home.

2)Problem is in the WIFI mode. And i use it only in WIFI mode have never used it in other mode.Primarily because i want it only if it is working in WIFI mode.

    3) Exchange option is available but i have been doing this for the last 2 months. It works fine for 10-15 days then boom it is gone. Usual problems are complete failure of the modem (no power even if adapter is changed), fails to retian IP, (keeps going back to 192 odd setting), have named my N/w kingpin looses that and goes back to ITI and stuff.
I mean it is beyond frustration i have repeatedly told the guys at BSNL that the ITI made DNA-A211 modems are lacking in quality but what to do? I am no Telecom minister to change them. Hence the reason for deciding to go for my own modem.
Have no problem with their N/w i think it is excellent, unfortunately the modems are high school level.

    @kingpin1
Try once more to exchange the "modem/router.if still , not agreed to by BSNL CC, would you like to make a complaint "ONLINE" to higher authorities, who seem to take action for All INDIA complaints from BSNL users.
