I got home 500 plan last month ..For the past one week even during day time the speed is only 20 kpbs << . The Technical details are below.

    Downstream Upstream
    SNR Margin (dB): 4.2 18.5
    Attenuation (dB): 55.0 29.3

I feel it is line problem . BSNL customer service do not accept it is a line problem .

Please let me know how to rectify the problem

your downstream SNR margin is too low.it must be greater than 10 & is usually around 25.if your SNR is too low(less than 10) then you will get frequent disconnections.

similarly your downstream line attn is very high.in my case it is 29 for downstream & 15 for upstream.line attn represents how far are you from local exchange.i am at a distance of around 2km so unless you are 6-7 km or even more away from your exchange your local line attn should not be this much.the more your line attn is the lesser speed you will get.

    Hi all
I have been using home 500 plan for almost 5 months now and I always get average download spead of 1800-1950kpbs which is according to the speeds promised by the BSNL.

I have read all the posts in for this topic.... and noticed that most of the users are doing speed test only once.. which often gives inaccurate results...

In addition to what is mentioned earlier in to do speed tests... I would also like to add some more things...

    > Always do speed test when the BSNL servers are not busy.. ie during off peak periods... if u do speed tests during peak hours u will always get low download speeds (Though in theory DSL connections should not be effected by the number of users online on a particular server but in reality it does)

    > Second most important thing is to do speed test 3-6 times and take average of all tests to arrive at your max down/up speeds

    > Third and the most important point is to use reliable speed test servers... I have been a user of High speed Internet services (download 10-99MB and upload 1MB) for 6 yrs now and observed that only a few speed test servers give accurate results.....

Try this speed test server... Speakeasy - Speed Test and select Seattle server... though this server is far away in North America, my experience tell that this is one of the best speed test servers...

Hope this helps...If would be interesting if users can try that above noted points and lets us know the outcome

Did port forwarding, changed phoneline, got my splitter replaced, and last but not the least tweaked the utorrent settings as given in some post

Hey, I wanted a good broadband connection for watching youtube vids, downloading songs and maybe movie torrents. But i dont know which plan to go for??? The Rs750 unlimited plan for 256Kbps or Rs500c pla for 256Kbps-2 Mbps. Also I go to college and dont have lots of free time, is it advisable to sit from 2-8 pm.

PS Currently i am on Rs 250 plan for 256Kbps-2 Mbps. I used it a lot my last month bill had come Rs2200. (Damn youtube)

home 500c is better.. you can download free during 2-8am ( not pm) .. and you dont have to be awake all night for this.. you can schedule your connection.. since you download a lot.. you can use the 500c plan.. the 750 unlimited is pretty slow and will take time to download..

hey guys, i had applied for a plan change from 750UL to 500C, they changed it on august 1, but the download speed is still 30-32 kBps. I chkd my order status on the portal, it says -
    Order Type Plan Change
    Plan Name Home 500 C
    Order Status Open

Also when i wanted to see my usage records for the last 2 days, i.e. august 1 and 2, it says No Usage records found for august 2008. What the hell?

@poolboyz,unless order status become provisioned your plan is not changed officially.

@gurusam,uTorrent shows speed in KBps & 1KBps=8kbps so on a 2mbps line you will get ~230-240KBps which is what you are getting.

NOTE: Vote is in kbps (kilo bits per second)

1 kBps (kilo Bytes per second)= 8 kbps (kilo bits per second)

    example,
    32 kBps = 256kbps

    Thanks a Ton

Your streaming speed also depends on the server you are downloading the stream from... its a two way affair so it might also get bottlenecked at the server even even if your speed is good

i am a bit confused regarding kBps and kbps.
if a 10 MB file is to be download, how much time will take it to download at say a speed of 32 kBps

    1KB=8Kb (KB-kilobyte,Kb-kilobit)
    32KBps=32kilobytes in 1 second
    10MB(megabyte)=(10 X 1024) Kilobytes
    Rest ,you do the math.

I think download speed depends on the server from where we are downloading. While downloading from torrent sites, I have reached up to 300 KBps because number of peers were more and their upload speed was good.
