I have been using the 500 plan since june 2006, and use the 2-8am slot extensively..I must be frank in mentioning that i am quite happy with its performance. I also monitor the real time bandwidth on a continuous basis. During normal hours, i get a decent 130-180 KB/s and maxes out at around 210 KB/s quite often. However, since the last 3 months i have noticed that the 2-8 am slot does not go above 30-50 KB/s under any circumstances. If you watch the bandwidth monitor, the moment the clock ticks over 8 am, the bandwidth shoots up suddenly to the mid 100's. This is probably indicative that BSNL is deliberately suppressing the bandwidth to its users during the free period, which obviously was not the case earlier. I had written several mails to BSNL regarding this, but then, we all know how the customer service of BSNL operates.. :-) Is there any way this forum could make a representation to BSNL ?
cheers

I have been using broadband since march 2008 ..............
for direct downloads via rapidshare etc. i get a decently good speed of about 200-240KBps while for torrents i get around 230KBps maximum .................
@ eruptionjoojo
what about speeds during free time ? during normal times i also get the kind of speeds you mention.. my question is regarding speeds during free time..
As a heavy downloader I download around 3-5 GB everyday, see today also my speed(below) is more than 200kBps, so if you are not getting good speed, that does not mean BSNL is capping the download, there must be some explanation other than bandwidth control by BSNL.
As I have mentioned before that this is my second HOME500 connection in a different city (HYD)( 1st one is in Odisha), and I am sure that there must be enough heavy downloaders in here like me as well. But in spite of that I feel that there is no download speed cut from BSNL as I am getting consistent speed from day 1 of the connection as much as I was getting in Odisha.

Is it necessary to purchase Modem frm BSNL...?
I do have LAN card...!
one of my friend has BSNL broadband 900+ UL...he said even router is necessary.....Is that true...?![]()
You can purchase a modem of your own. But it is economical to use the BSNL one. I manage with a single instrument that BSNL gave me for 1000+ rupees. You can also opt for monthly rent.
You need an ADSL modem any how.
BSNL provides the cheapest modem possible, the same modem will cost you around 2500 or more in open market.
BSNL now provides 2 types of modems(actually there were 4 types before)
If you have a laptop or planning for one, better go for the wifi modem, it is future proof.
- general modem(1-lan + 1-usb slot)(driver cd included)=1000/-
- wifi modem(4-lan + 1 wifi)(no driver needed)=1600/-
If you are planning to keep the BSNL connection permanently, then better buy a modem. Because even if you disconnect your BSNL connection for sometime, you can again use the same modem next time when you take a new BSNL connection.
You need only one modem that's all, nothing more nothing less.
i have unlimited plane of bsnl but my speed is to slow how to up the speed?
Is it the download speed you are talking about or the browsing speed ?
If it is the download speed then try downloading something of size about 20MB or more with a good download manager like IDM or DAP or FDM , if you see speed close to 512k then your speed is fine otherwise, tell me.
and if your talking about torrent speeds then ensure that you have the required port open
Here is a reference of port forwarding in simple steps

Well i get an average around 1200 kbps. but have you encountered a weird problem downloading torrents. The connection breaks in around 10 mins. i need to restart the modem. Why is this happening
I just got my BSNL Connection 500C+
Speed - Download - .26 mb/s
Upload - .29.mb/s
What are you thoughts guys .. Is this on par with the general service ?
Do not worry about day time download speed.
The main essence of 500C+ is in night time download speed.
You should get somewhere from 150 to 240kBps(or 1.2mbps-1.92mbps) speed with a good download manager during the free usage time(2-8 AM).
If you are not getting that speed then you have to work a bit more.
where did you test that from?? try downloading a file from a website..
I think the best way to test the speed will be a download from Microsoft.
298 kBps using flashget. :001_tt2:
