Default BSNL Internet Speed.. Expected Data Flow Rates

    Hi all,
I need answers for some common issues regarding the BSNL internet services.. I appreciate if you can answer me the following:

    1. I have a HOME 1800 Plan at home, and when i run the internet speed test from "testmy.net" site, i get a Download Rate of 2297kbps (280kB/s) and an upload rate of 469kbps (57kB/s).. I ran multiple tests and the values are shown in the range shown above.. I believe the HOME 1800 plan should give me around 512kB/s (please correct me if i am wrong here).. So, am i receiving a lower Upload and Download Speed here for what i have subscribed to?

    2. I believe the site "testmy.net" server is located in USA.. DO you think this will have an adverse affect on the results of the internet speed test i've performed?

    3. Is there any authentic internet speed test website as provided by BSNL (or) any other which you are aware of (on which we can depend on the results)?

    4. If i am receiving a slow internet speed for what i have subscribed to, what is the efficient way to make a complaint to the BSNL folks (cuz, i've heard a lot of bad customer service from BSNL guys.. not sure if i'm correct.. but i appreciate anyone who educated me in this process)..

Thank you guys and i highly value and appreciate each and everyone's reply (answering my questionnaire with patience).. Thank you guys in advance..

    Use this Speedtest.

Choose the nearest server which I suppose would be Mumbai server.

Yes, it can have a impact on the ping you are getting but again it all depends on the number of hops that it is going through and etc etc. To cut long story short it depends on the network but theoretically it should depend on the geographical distance too.

But remember this speed tests DO NOT really give you a idea of actual speed you are getting!

I think there is a thread in this forum which has demystified quite a number of myths about these speed tests, do search for it.

    hello sekhorr

regarding your issues:here are the possible solutions (acc. to me)

query no.1) You are saying that you have home 1800 plan and you should get speed 512kbps upto 2Mbps okay(not in kBps as you have said),your plan says this but in reality you will get slower than expected speeds because the speeds which are mentioned here are in kbps not in kBps so, for converting kbps into kBps simply divide the mentioned speed by 8 as (1byte=8bits i hope i am correct here).

Acc. to my calculation if you have a connection of 512 kbps , you will get download speed of 64 kBps and 2Mbps means 2048kbps(i think) so the download speed would be .......................you do the math
and let me tell you something that these are not dedicated speeds there will be always up & down in the speed.

quer no.2)dont rely on any of the internet speed test they are all fake and absurd(in my opinion) whether you believe it or not!

query no.3)there are no authenticated speed tests, but most of the users say speedtest.net is actual but...............i doubt that because sometimes its meter says 500 -600 kbps and sometimes more, and that is not possible as i have ul 900 plus plan and in this plan the speed is upto 256kbps

regarding query no.4.) i dont have much idea about complaining as you know bsnl is government they dont give a damn about your complain (i am telling you what is the situation in my area only )
rest it is upto you, file a complain, just give it a try if your complain is entertained you are a lucky person.

    thanks

Default Thanks guys but i have another question here..

You guys are awesome.. Thanks for your detailed responses guys.. Thanks "Player" and the rest of the folks for explaining me the situation in clear detail.. I appreciate that...

But let me ask you one more question here.. This thing with bits and bytes are little confusing with speed tests and the expected internet speeds.. because, i have noticed that each site (depending on the region) vary on the usage of the term kbps and KB/s etc.,

For example, just a little while ago (even though i noticed that internet speeds are slow today because of the breakage of some underwater cable near mediterranean sea or so) i made a test from Speedtest.net site (the server being located in Mumbai) and i got the results as follows:

    Download 4092 kb/s
    Upload 476kb/s

Doesn't these values i got are higher than what your expectation for my bandwidth is? How do you explain this strange anamoly? (or i think i missed something out here)

Please shed your thoughts on the same..
    Thank you

as many people have said here including myself don't rely on these tests from speed testing sites.you can get an actual speed idea only when you download a big file(>300mb) using a very good seeded torrent or using some download manager like flashget & noticing the average speed after download finishes.i downloaded windows vista from microsoft site using flashget with 30 simultaneous connections & got speeds from 190-270KBps & avreage speed after download finished was 214KBps.
